Willie Miller played 20 times for Scotland between 1982 and 1984. So with an average of 7 matches per season he would be up to 67 games.

Adding in Scotland appearances: Miller played 63 games in 1981-82... 68 games in 1982-83... and 66 games in 1983-84.

My gut instinct is the number of games fulfilled by players at top clubs, and being selected for internationals, will have been more static over time in comparison with the number of games clubs play.

Decades ago squad rotation was unheard of (also substitutions) - your best players started every week. Regional cups were first-team games plus there was a plethora of other representative football: B internationals, League selects, inter-city selects, and so on. Players doing their national service turned-out in countless forces games... if you count the latter Duncan Edwards played almost 100 games in 1956-57 and of course the season was shorter then, he generally played 3 games-a-week.
