These 3 games will be very exciting.I think Conference C get the best draw, with a week between matches and the likely best opponent at home, so it's not as balanced as, say, a home-and-away with an even number of teams. HibeeJibee Posted March 18, 2019 Author Share Posted March 18, 2019 As soon as you have 3 conferences the number of games (and dates) needed jumps from 1 or 2 up to either 3 or 6. Clearly the main disadvantage is that with an odd number of teams someone doesn't play on the last day. You could avoid this by adding in the best runner-up to make 4. However that would see 2 clubs having 2 home games and 2 clubs having only 1 home game: unless you played a pair of games at neutral venues (i.e. so everyone got 1 home / 1 neutral / 1 away). More fundamentally, the other runners-up would be grumpy - and there'd be a chance the runner-up could win the league! Playing only 3 games instead of 6 games is actually a help there. Playing 6 games sees various scenarios where one team playing on the last day cannot finish top (so haven't much incentive to try), plus it's possible for the last 1 or 2 games to be deadrubbers. Playing 3 games there is only a single such scenario, plus only 1 game can be a deadrubber (and if so the side not playing have already won). Clearly they are not a precedent at 20 years and 110 years distance... but it's worth saying the 3 game model was used the only time a 3-way tie ever occurred in the Scottish League (to settle 1914-15 Division Two), and was to be used the only time a three-way playoff was ever used in the Scottish League (to settle SPL expansion for 2000-01: but Falkirk didn't have 10,000 seats). 0 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

You don’t get leagues all around the world that have to deal with twice as many new members as existing members. The conferences are a one-off this season. This is the best way of dealing with it. Teams around the world play home and away for two legged ties as there's big distances between them resulting in home advantage with travel time and more home fans. HibeeJibee Posted April 21, 2019 Author Share Posted April 21, 2019 (edited) So after last-day drama we finally know the Title Round Robin make-up, including a midweek Midlothian derby:Saturday 27th April Penicuik Athletic v Broxburn AthleticWednesday 1st May Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic v Penicuik AthleticSaturday 4th May Broxburn Athletic v Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic Any game which ends in a draw goes to a penalty shoot-out for a bonus point, to lessen the chance of a dead heat. In the unlikely event 2 or all 3 teams are tied on points, goal difference, goals for, head-to-head result, away goals, and away goals in head-to-head result, then Bonnyrigg Rose Athletic would be champion, on the basis of having the best record in the conferences - their points total being 67pts in comparison to 66pts for Broxburn and 63pts for Penicuik. Although few - none? - would've thought of it as such, their closing league wins over LTHV and Eyemouth could yet pay dividends. Penicuik will be looking to make home advantage count while Broxburn know at least avoiding defeat can put them in a good position for their home game next week. Bonnyrigg watch on with interest... With the first match in the conference play-offs due to take place today between Penicuik Athletic and Broxburn Athletic at Penicuik Park, the following is hopefully a helpful guide to the play-off rules which were distributed to all clubs before the start of the season: Title Round Robin1. the champions of the three divisions will contest a title round robin stage 2. the title round robin stage shall be played on a home or away principle, with each club playing one home game and one away game, what club plays which opponent at home and which away being decided randomly; three points for a win and one point for a draw. Where a match is drawn it will be followed by the taking of kicks from the penalty mark as defined by International FA Board rules, the winner receiving a further one point.
