Is this an update on the original policy of "voluntary national service"?

No idea, just going by the Guardian's take.

Quote

1) Introducing a form of national citizen service. David Cameron introduced a voluntary version of this. Umunna seems to favour making it compulsory.

Crispin Hunt from the longpigs is running for tinge, that's disappointing.

Has been funny to watch the overton window shift back to the left and see Britpop for the reactionaries they were.

The Independent online giving Umunna headline coverage!  He’s claiming his bunch only had four weeks to organise a European campaign, so did Farage.

Him and his fellow turncoats have become a political irrelevance in record time; shame.

It will be interesting to see how they will vote in a VOC; they must be shit scared about fighting their seats.

No they won't, each of them will glide effortlessly into a well-paid sinecure because that's the way these things work.
But their imminent demise as a party/movement/greetin' meeting does at least confirm that most voters still prefer conviction politics as opposed to the managerial type. On such a polarised issue as Brexit the middle ground was always going to turn into a huge sink hole.
This is a point obviously still lost on Corbyn.

I'm be amazed if Brexit's preparations didn't start at the latest in December when May's deal went down, with shed loads of American money. He didn't plan it on the back of an envelope in a pub 6 weeks ago.

There's a lot of disgruntled melts in the Labour Party who are going to have to suck it up a bit longer unless they just have another coup attempt to pass the time.
I'm fairly pro Corbyn but surely he's been weakened by these results?

He's completely invisible . I've changed my mind, Labour need a new leader.

The SNP got a bigger vote share than Change UK across Great Britain :o

Not surprising, especially after Heidi Allen, Change UK's leader, suggested tactical voting for the Lib Dems outside London. She got her wish, despite her party's anger, but hasn't resigned yet.

Change UK's candidates were a strange bunch. They  included Gavin Esler (ex BBC) and Rachel Johnson (Boris's sister). Then there were tired old retreads from other parties - Richard Ashworth (Tory MEP who defected in April), Stephen Dorrell (ex Tory Cabinet minister), Neil Carmichael (ex Tory MP) and Roger Casale (ex Labour MP).

They are as relevant and welcome as spunk on the bedsheets.
