Alliance of American Football

The Alliance of American Football (or AAF) is a new professional football league. Its the first attempt at a 2nd tier football league since the XFL in the early 00's (the XFL itself is relaunching in 2020). Play began 9th of Feb.

League consists of for its initial season 8 teams in 2 conferences playing 10 games (6 in conference & 4 out conference). Top two from each conference go to playoffs. Teams are as follows:

east

Atlanta Legends

Birmingham Iron

Memphis Express

Orlando Apollos

west

Arizona Hotshots

Salt Lake Stallions

San Antonio Commanders

San Diego Fleet

League has some quirky rules such as no extra point kicks only allowing two point conversions, no kickoffs (teams start from their own 25), reduced play clock of 35 seconds & defenses cant rush more than five players on or across the line of scrimmage + no defensive player can criss the line of scrimmage for more than two yards outside offensive tackles. Overtime uses the high school 'Kansas Playoff' rule where teams start at the others 10 yd line & get four downs to score with no field goals. If no team scores after an attempt each game is declared a tie. In playoffs its played until one scores and the other fails to.

It's nice to see another avenue for those who dont cut it in NFL to continue in professional football (only option currently is CFL). Hopefully it lasts & doesnt dissapear after a few seasons.

I've been watching it. As you say, it's good to see another avenue for players to try and make it. There's a hall of famer or two that owe their career to chances given in developmental leagues. The quality might not always be there but I think there's definitely a market there for a tier below the NFL.

The LFA is another option, the CFL recently conducted a draft and recruited some players.

Kind of supporting Brummie Iron, just due to the City name being the same. They do have a few ex-Bears players and a better Kicker than Chicago in Nick Novak. Also Trent Richardson plays for them.

About time there was another League for players to show their skills in and try and get picked up by the NFL again.

Pacific League is a bit different as it's soley recruiting high schoolers not going college/university (not counting community college) nor out of school for over three years. Such players aren't eligible to play in the NFL.

As mentioned its been pushed back to 2020.

Looks like it's in trouble and could fold before the weekend.  The premise that this was going to play as a sort of development league to the NFL has come a cropper because of the CBA agreed between the NFL and NFLPA - mainly the fact players cannot be forced to practice/take part in any football activity during the Offseason.
