MAGYAR1 Posted March 6, 2019 Share Posted March 6, 2019 According to the 'Who's Who of Kilmarnock' by Bill Donnachie, Samuel Cowan was an inside forward for Kilmarnock making 34 appearances and scoring 9 goals between 1949 and 1952. He was 5ft 5in in height. He made his debut against Albion Rovers on 10/9/49. His career started at Queen's Park before moving to Newton Stewart, Killie, Stranraer and then Newton Stewart again. In 1973 he was the Irvine Victoria manager. Donnachie says he was 'a small, slightly built player, Sam was an inside-forward of the old school, crafty, scheming and a good finisher. Goals 1946-47 QPARK 1 1947-48 QPARK 16 1 3 1948-49 QPARK 1 1949-50 KILM 13 5 1 1950-51 KILM 7 2 1951-52 KILM 9 4 2 1946-47 His first match for Queen’s Park was a League Cup match away to St Mirren on 26/10/46. 1947-48 He gets a run in the team but they finish bottom of Division A and relegated. 1948-49 Only plays one match away to Dunfermline on 1/9/48 1949-50 Moves to Kilmarnock and scores 5 goals including two in 4-0 win over Ayr at Hampden. Also scores a goal against his old team Queen’s Park in 3-1 win Hampden in front of a crowd of 27,205 1950-51 Plays 7 League and 2 League Cup matches without scoring. 1951-52 His last season at Kilmarnock where his last match was a 2-1 win against Falkirk at home on 22/3/52. This information is taken from a combination of the John Litster Post-War Records, the Kilmarnock book by Bill Donnachie and Queen’s Park book ‘The Men With Educated Feet’ by FHC Robertson. The photos are also taken from these last two books. In the Queen’s Park photo you can see Sam is not wearing the strip but a suit with a handkerchief.
