Scrappy game, didn’t play particularly well when you’re playing with no strikers, a win’s a win. Hopefully any one (two, or three) of Goodwillie, Syvertsen or Love are back next week. Banks looked a good player when he came on. Very fast, good feet and put himself about pretty well for a 17 year old. Fitzpatrick worked hard up front and held the ball up better than Aaron Millar ever has. As I said on a previous post, he was playing centre-half for Clydebank last week so well done him. Jack Burton Posted February 16, 2019 Share Posted February 16, 2019 Made hardwork of that today. The Albion Rovers keeper made another great double save in the first half to keep it at 1-0. Thought Fitzpatrick looked lost up front in the second half but done OK first half. We were far too open in the second half and were lucky to get away with it a few times. Fingers crossed one of either Goodwillie, Syvertsen or Love is back next week. Banks looked decent when he came on. the_bully_wee Posted February 16, 2019 Share Posted February 16, 2019 Neither pretty nor particularly convincing today, with the defence in particular looking a bit shaky and guilty of poor and naive distribution at times. Three points is three points though, and with us having to rely on a debutant centre-back being deployed up front, that's all you can ask for. We created plenty of decent openings and chances but were guilty of not taking them, with the ever-impressive Morrison making several good stops. While Fitzpatrick obviously wasn't brilliant - and might not be good enough for this level - he worked his socks off today and did precisely what nobody else in our squad can, and that is to provide a direct physical challenge to Rovers' centre backs, disrupt them and drag us up the park with a combative style and, at times, decent hold-up play. He was absolutely puggled late on, but completely not worth the abuse he was receiving from a highly tedious older gentleman located in my vicinity. If he's billed as a midfielder then, given his build, he may well be able to fill in for Kevin Nicoll, who I can't imagine we will be seeing any time before April after that nasty fall. Banks looks like a good addition; seems to be pretty comfortable with both feet, quick and willing to face defenders up. Boyle was more effective than he's been for a while, Lamont produced a fine finish with some other decent play, Rankin (and Cuddihy and Grant) continued their fine form and Currie's distribution was at times excellent, with his save from the Spaniard's lob a great display of positioning, anticipation and reactions. McStay had one of his poorer games, but those are becoming fewer and fewer, and McNiff was as effective as you can ask for at left-back - Stewart in for next week's game, though, please. I expected more assurance from the Lang/Cogill axis; hopefully today was just an off day. I actually thought the conditions were pretty difficult today, with a deceptively strong wind and what looked to be a very sticky pitch. Only one David Marsh Posted February 16, 2019 Share Posted February 16, 2019 We were awful today we were just lucky albion were worse, too many mistakes at the back and players getting caught up in possession, declan just looked like a centre half playing up front (hopefully we get goodie back soon) lamont took his goal well and special mention to the rovers keeper for keeping the scoreline down to one. Rovers did have a go and did threaten to score luckily there finishing was woeful. They also seemed to see Mcniff wasn't a threat with the amount of space they left him in first half but I'd still want stewart back in for qp, cogill was rotten (didn't think rumsby deserved to be dropped) Boyle much better than last week and the new boy looked decent. David W Posted February 16, 2019 Share Posted February 16, 2019 Three points the main positive amid an acceptance that we've all seen us drop points against awful teams in such situations. Should've been more. 7 points in three games without Goodwillie is a good return. Albion Rovers are better than earlier this season but the current team is still amongst the worst sides ever at this level. Our team selection was crazy; going back to that midfield against that team the start of the game was as horrible as you would predict. Improved slightly when Nicoll went off and we got another attacking player on. Tactics seemed to be McNiff basically playing as a winger to give us a big crossfield ball and leaving two centre halves back on their own. Or centre backs trying to play lateral passes into Boyle/Rankin, which Albion soon started to intercept. Boyle, Currie, Grant and Rankin played okay. The rest can play much better, McStay and Lang in particular. Well done to Fitzpatrick for working hard in a different position but the truth is he was miles off the pace. No movement at all, and he was caught on his heels all game. Need Syvertsen or Goodwillie back next week. Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
