Bo'ness history - Day by day

Recommended Posts

Frankie was signed in 1961 from Broomhall Juvs and in 61/2 scored 14 in 16 games.  His appearances the following season were fewer, 6 games and 4 goals and he left for Grangemouth United at the end of 1962

On to 1968 now and as the Journal reported ' Bo'ness hit four goals against punchless League champions'  Newtown witnessed a 4-0 win for the BU's against Linlithgow.  Ian Lourie started things off before big Joe McMeechan added a penalty before the break, Hamish Simpson netted his first goal in over a year and Bob Nisbet completed the rout.

The team was: Hodge, Myles, Makarus, McQueen, McMeechan, Simpson, Bernard, Sneddon, Nisbet, Lourie, Watson

Certainly, the team bus broke down, which led to a late kick-off.  Not sure if picked up by Supporters Club as it was a full bus that day.  Remember feeling distinctly unchuffed when I couldn't get on.  Got a last-minute lift and expected to miss first 20 mins but got there for kick-off due to break down.

1951 now and a crowd of over 2000 at Newtown saw Linlithgow brushed aside in the first half, as the homesters went in 3 goals up.  The BU's took the foot off the the gas after the break and the score finished 3-0.  Jackie Liddell banged in a couple and was denied a hat-trick by an upright.  Bobby Walker, recently signed from Stirling Albion got the other.

The team was: Smith, Mitchell, McKeeman, Neillands, Fitzgerald, McKie, McKinnon, Liddell, Walker, Hall, Lafferty

There seemed to be dozens of players signed every season back then lol, I'll take a stab in the dark and go for Barry Donald?

Teaser today.  Which newly-signed midfielder made his debut in a 3-2 win over Edinburgh United in a League Cup tie in 2010?

Can safely say, this player played a big part in our success that season, playing 30 games.

In 1992, it was still League Cup time and the BU's travelled to Sauchie.  They would not have expectedto come back with an 8-2 win however.  Strangely, no hat-tricks that day but Jimmy Burns and Paul McLaren hit doubles, the latter including a penalty.  Singles came from George Allison, Gary Dalton, Gary McLennan & Bryan Purdie

1963 and 3 days after winning at Prestonfield, the BU's hosted Camelon for the first home League match that season.  Nobody could have predicted the final score of 5-5 and I do wish I had a match report to hand!.  The BU scorers were Joe Young, a double from Kenny Gillespie and 2 own goals thrown in for good measure.

The team was:  Allan, Cram, McCallum, Mitchell, W Campbell, Johnstone, Gibb, Myles, Gillespie, Young, Hannah

Three answers to today's teaser.  Which three players scored their first BU goals this day in 2011, in a 4-3 win over Falkirk Juniors?

Balyntyne  ? Stewart ?
