The BU's surprised most people, coming home with a 4-2 win under their belts. Ian Wodecki, with a double, hit his 30th goal of the season in only 28 games. Tommy Ure & Ramsay also scored. The final league game of the season was settled by a Tom Breen goal, as the BU's won 1-0. Andy joined in 1977 and played his last game in 1995. He played a minimum of 532 games, scoring 18 goals. Due to the Journal not giving teams all the time, you can probably safely add another 50 to his appearance tally. Jambo'ness Posted June 1, 2019 Author Share Posted June 1, 2019 June 1st Back to 1999 and what had been a poor season came to a head with the BU's requiring to beat visitors Arniston Rangers, in order to avoid relegation. Former United 'keeper Gavin Kirkwood could no nothing to stop his former side as they stormed into a 1st minute lead. Although on top, it wasn't until the hour mark that goal number 2 came. 20 minutes from time Jamie Loney completed his hat-trick as the BU's won 3-0. Grange Rovers were the opponents in the semi-final of the Thornton Shield, at Newtown. A crowd of over 6000 saw an exciting match. Always in command, it took 30 minutes for the first goal. Ending 3-1 to the the BU's, John McGowan scored two, one a penalty and jim McLean also scored. The team was: Stanners, W. Not surprisingly some trialists were used for the trip to Dunbar United. In a stiff crosswind, despite falling behind, the BU's went on to win 4-1. The scorers were Paddy Buckley, with a brace, Peter Adam & James Sproull. The goals certainly flowed as the BU's team full of trialists defeated the visitors 6-4. The goals came from Jim McPaul, the trialist OR and braces from Matt Hunter and the trialist IR. On the odd occasion the actual name slips through but very often just listed as 'Newman', 'Trialist' or my favourite 'A N Other' Going back in time, the favoured names were colours, 'Black', 'Brown' or ''White'.
