Bo'ness history - Day by day

Recommended Posts

The 12th now and in 1952, Bathgate were the visitors in the BU's first League game since the end of August.  They played an amazing 17 cup-ties in the intervening period..  Thistle were despatched 3-2 with goals from Bobby Walker, Bishop & Archie Neill.  I don't have the first name of Bishop, so if anybody can help, please let me know.

The team that day was: Ronald, Mitchell, McKeeman, Neillands, McBlain, McKie, Bishop, Liddell, Walker, Kelly, Neill.

In 1991 Broughty Athletic were Beaten 4-0 in the 3rd round of the Junior Cup, with Jimmy Burns chipping in with a hat-trick.

The main event on the 13th was in 1968 and a St Michaels Cup match at Newtongrange.  The BU's came away with a 3-0 win with a double from John Bernard and one from Brian Watson.  The team that day was: Crawford, Thomson, McCandless, McMeechan, Gray, McQueen, Bernard, Cowan, McGuire, Orr, Watson.

In the same competition in 2007, Edinburgh United were narrowly defeated 2-1 with Derek Sinclair netting a brace

Back to more recent times for the 14th.

A good result from 1995 when Dalkeith were defeated 5-1 away in the 3rd round of the Fife and Lothians Cup.  The goals came from Eddie Hallford, Jimmy Gilmour, Mark Whyte and a double from John Sludden.  The team was: Binnie, Dalton, Meldrum (Burns), Cullie, McLean, Wilcox, Whyte, Allison, Sludden, Gilmour, Hallford.

In 2006, Shotts were defeated in the Junior Cup 2-0, away.  The goals came from new signing Andy Roberts and Marc Anthony.

Definitely the 15th now :)

1994 saw a triumph in the Fife and Lothians Cup.  It all started with a 5-0 win at Lochore Welfare.  The team was : Lawson, Hoggan, Meldrum, McLennan, McLean, Fraser, Allison, Burns, Gallagher (Dalton), Whyte, McLaren.  Stuart Gallagher scored a double, with the others coming from George Allison, Mark Whyte & Jimmy Burns.

1966 saw the first of 3 Junior cup-ties with Larkhall Thistle.  This one ended 0-0 at Newtown.

1983's run to the Junior Cup Final was being stalled as again we drew 1-1 with Brechin Victoria, in a home replay.

First Larkhall game was 2-2 away I think - then 0-0 before 2 further replays one ending 3-3 after extra time -  1 replay was at Shotts and the other in Glasgow ( Petershill ? ) after 53 yrs could be wrong but we got through in the end  to face Armadale in an interesting tie

Glasgow replay was at Saracen Park, home of Ashfield.

Trying to get this on line early is leading to daft wee mistakes.  You're quite right the first game was on the 4th and was 2-2.  We then played a Brown Cup tie with Grangemouth United before the replay on the 15th.

Cracking one for BU fans tomorrow!

One match stands out on the 16th in 1965.  The BU's should have been visiting Bonnybridge but the Duncan Stewart Memorial Park was unplayable. We had already played them at Newtown and so they switched their 'home' match to Newtown.  How they must have regretted that decision, as they were sent home on the back of a record-equalling 12-0 defeat.  Reports state that the BU's could have scored 20 but ex-Bo'ness winger Hugh Hannah also missed two open goals for the visitors.

The team that day was: Trialist, Bellamy, Kennedy, Myles, Chambers, Bloy, McManus, McKinnon, Meikle, Trialist, Craig.

Archie Meikle netted his second 5 goal haul of the season, Frankie Craig weighed in with a hat-trick and the trialist inside -left hit a double (it may have been George McKinnon but cannot confirm).  The other two came from Sandy Myles & Alex Bloy.
