Is there any grounds for appeal on this? It’s funny as f**k but do Mercedes have a right for appeal and could potentially cause this to be overturned?
They can certainly ask questions about how Masi interpreted the rules at the end of the race. I don't see how they can change the result though as none of that was of Max or Red Bull's doing.

The whole unlapping thing is an absolute nonsense though. Maybe they'll finally look at it

Allowing cars to unlap is absolutely necessary because the SC artificially puts a portion of the field a lap behind the cars ahead. Take Lando for example, before the SC he was 10s behind Gasly but once picked up by the SC was almost a lap behind Gasly who was now at the back of the SC queue. Also means you don't have lapped cars interrupting fights between the leaders.

The free tyre change under a red flag needs to go as well.

Maybe, but then you have safety issues as a red flag is usually as a result of a crash so there'll be debris on the tyres. And what if you were just about to make a pit stop to replace worn tyres before a red flag, do you have to restart on the same tyres and then have a pit stop under green which basically puts you at the back?

On what grounds and what would be the race result?

The bottom line is that Hamilton had track position and failed to defend it.  Wolff spent the race lobbying the race director and finally got told to f**k off.

Toto should've been told to f**k off after he was moaning to Masi not to throw a yellow before the VSC for Giovinazzi, no need to even get involved there.

Surely Hamilton would've been able to hold off or overtake Verstappen if he'd pitted for softs too when Latifi binned it?

The problem is if HAM pits first and VER doesn't then you might lose track position so you're screwed if the race finishes under SC (would need to work out the gap versus time lost pitting under SC), especially as Mercedes were probably thinking that lapped cars overtaking in theory means less chance of the race restarting...

One thing I would say is even if they let the other cars through, surely that would have only taken a handful more seconds and they would have raced the last lap anyway?

If Masi had let the five cars through at the other side of the track then all cars would've got through there, but at turn 9 it was too late to do so before the final lap.

This is just going to be a bad look for F1 whatever the result tbh.

It's hardly a bad look, it's the most interest they've had in the sport in 20 years

However if they overturn the result everyone who has tuned in will just think the sport is a farce and turn off again

Yup, pretty much this. Why waste 2 hours watching it if teams are going to go mewling to Race Control with a fucking barrister [emoji23]
