Isolated tribe kill American

An American tourist/missionary has been killed by one of the last uncontacted tribes in the world, the Sentinelese, who live on north Sentinel Island, one of the Andaman Islands, located in the Indian Ocean.

John Allen Chau paid local fisherman to take him to the island, which he wanted to visit to try and convert the islanders to Christianity. He paddled to the island in a kayak, carrying a Bible, some fishing line and a football. As soon as he set foot on the island he was shot with an arrow. On a previous visit the islanders had shot arrows at him but failed to kill him. His body is now on the island but needs to be recovered as any contact with the outside world is extremely dangerous for the Sentinelese, who have little genetic immunity to common diseases. It’s illegal to try and contact them and the Indian government has opened criminal proceedings against the fisherman who took Mr Chau.

This might sound harsh but he got what he deserved. I’ve read about the Sentinelese before and they are extremely aggressive with anyone trying to contact them and have previously killed fisherman who tried to fish off their island. It’s extremely dangerous for them to be contacted as other tribal societies have shown and Mr Chau appears to have had his own messiah complex in trying to introduce them o his religion.

Have any P&Bers ever tried to contact a previously uncontacted tribe?
Have any P&Bers ever been part of a tribal society who received unwanted contact?
Do any P&Bers fancy arranging for the next subcrawl to take place in North Sentinel Island?

In agreement here.

No excuse for ignorance, the islanders have repeatedly made it clear they want no interaction with outside forces every time people have attempted to approach them.

When you consider if he had gone there with even a trivial infection or other ailment he could have wiped out the entire population, tool.

When ships the remote island of Tristan da Cunha, the elderly natives hide away - just in case.  I read about one tourist being screamed at because he sneezed in a supermarket.

The island is also known as "Asthma Island" since more than half the population suffer from it.  The population are descended from seven families original of which four had Asthma.  There is a clip on YouTube about this.  The island is used to research asthma.

If he had swapped the bible and the football for beer and chicken he might have had a chance of success.

The Sentinelese are fascinating firstly because we know next to nothing about them, and secondly because they are one of the last genuinely uncontacted tribes. There still will be a few others in places like the Brazilian rainforest or PNG, but those will live in regions big enough that they can fade deeper into the jungle and avoid anyone searching for them. The Sentinelese don't have that option as they live on an island of a few square miles so their only option is to show unremitting hostility to anyone who approaches.

This case does however raise the question of who actually were the most backward party involved; the ones for whom the Stone Age is yet to happen, or the one who blindly believed his invisible pal in the sky would protect him from arrows and translate his message for him...

That was his other mistake - should have been a cricket ball.

Four/five day old news.

When I first read about it I thought “what an idiot, deserves him right”.

A couple of days later when it emerged he was engaged in Christian proselytism I was very happy that they had taken the demented c**t out.
