D.A.F.C
This is a great idea. I went to a school that had a catholic school across the road. We started calling them ******s because we heard the older kids doing it. Had no idea what it meant until I got older, you are taught hatred and I hope that if kids are taught that being whatever is fine at an early age then hopefully the bigots and idiots will be the ones scared to be themselves. There’s a group of wankers who shout homophobic stuff most weeks at Dunfermline games. They need to do one and I cringe every time they came out with the same bs song. Not sure how to get them to stop it, the police and stewards do nothing. I would hate to think that someone has brought a potential fan along to a game who is gay and heard that. Utterly shameful. The important question is what high school you went to. Bear in mind that out of a possible 5 answers, only 1 is acceptable. Popular Post stumigoo
Well this has been an interesting read for a Sunday morning. I'd say the thread has been dominated by one or two individuals who hold, thankfully, a minority view on something like this and it is heartening to see so many people have a much more positive and sensible approach. It is also clear to see that there are more than a few people who are very well qualified to talk about the subject given their knowledge level or the fact that they are involved in education. As a teacher myself (and a Guidance Teacher) I fully back the plans to embed LGBTI teaching across the curriculum to provide our young people with the information they need to form their own judgements and opinions. That is what school is for is it not? Informing young people about the society they belong to and will discover. As an RE teacher (a non-religious RE teacher at that) I have had his debate on many occasions with regards to my subject and it's place in school. What I always tell people is that we do not teach people HOW to be religious, we teach people ABOUT religion and in turn we touch on Psychology, Politics, History and Sociology. All of this gives young people the tools they need to hopefully become a positive part of our Scottish society (regardless of their job, income or social status). Even if it doesn't then we still have given them the information they need to know more about their world and then make informed decisions based on that. Again, this is an objective of education and I am proud that my own school has taken steps to highlight LGBTI issues and the other huge issue in society, mental health (probably the most destructive issue facing our youth). We would not be doing our job if we hid parts of society and culture from young people. I've seen first hand the devastation that homophobic abuse causes and I've also seen the anxiety and panic in young people who are scared to present their identity to their peers because those around them (or their perception of those around them) is one that causes them so much fear. Thankfully I can say that 99% of young people I know are very, very open and respectful of people's identity (whether that be race, religion or anything else). Scotland's society is better for such inclusive education policies and openness.
