East of scotland vs juniors

Recommended Posts

Have to say the east of Scotland league teams of last season have very much struggled against the juniors coming over this year. The only real members to keep up with the juniors are leith, and closest behind them in times of points are Hawick(relegated from lowland) in their league, already two teams, namely tweedmouth and Eyemouth have forfeited games. It’s good to see all the juniors progressing but it’s becoming evident that not many EOS clubs can compete with the funding that a good amount of the clubs have that came from juniors. On the other hand though a lot of decent east of Scotland players who wouldn’t otherwise get much money now have a chance to earn a move to one of the big boys and further their career.

Certainly the expectation was LTHV would challenge in 'B'... while Leith in A, Tynecastle in B, and Heriot-Watt + Preston in C would be tussling for top 5s.

So far that looks accurate except for LTHV's struggles on the one hand, and Stirling Uni EOS's strong start on the other.

Definitely, I’ve been disappointed with LTHV was expecting them to be toe toe with the big guns, did they not defeat lowland league opposition in a cup?

Yes they beat Spartans 3-2, and are up against Cumbernauld Colts this Saturday. Their league results have been all over the place though - drawn with Tynecastle, lost to Burntisland, Crossgates and Haddington, but won against Dundonald and Sauchie!

Oh really!! What a shocker. The EoS sides are struggling, did anybody really expect anything different. The juniors weren't invited to make up the numbers they were invited to make the league stronger and add depth to the pyramid. Wouldn't take the Brain of Britain to figure out such as Eyemouth and Tweedmouth would still be at the bottom. Rather than trying to score points, junior better than EoS or vice versa, everyone is looking at competitive leagues after the initial switch over, what's wrong with that?

Off course,  how’s that hardly surprising? The junior teams have massive budgets  and any decent players from east of Scotland teams from last season, all just sign for the junior teams.  Comparing them makes no sense.

LTHV - lost plenty of players

Preston - best player to Broxburn in same league

H watt - lost players to East fife, Tranent and Broxburn

Tynecastle - Bonnyrigg etc

No need for comparisons anymore.

It’s not a level playing field at all.

Not really. The top five in each league are ex junior. That isn't the point though. We all knew there was a big gulf from the Superleague and Premier vs EoS. From next season there is a injection of teams at all levels and it must be really refreshing for all the so called smaller teams.

It's not great seeing one sided scores and it's tough going but it's absolutely the right thing for the game.

In hindsight seeding leagues may have been a better option. I say that as the chat would have been at how competitive and how the standard has risen rather than how a lot of the games are hammerings.

Only if you go back 25 years, one of last seasons EoS sides are top 5.

...and the leagues were seeded.
