They drive on the left in Oz as well and the guy reckoned it was because the roads are cambered slightly to the left for drainage purposes so all the debris ends up on the left of the road. He said the front wheel usually flicks up the debris which then punctures the rear tyre although I don't understand why the front wheel doesn't get punctured.
