This isn't really offensive.
It does however highlight how laughably moronic a gathering of Rangers minded people is though.

This sums it up nicely, imagine actually going to one of these events. Durrant’s comment was probably the highlight of the evening for the majority.

Also says a lot about the man when he doesn’t have the conviction to say this on a more public forum, like when he was on Si Ferry’s YouTube. Hope he gets sacked from whatever job he is in.

Moron makes moronic comment at event attended by morons...

Big deal....I'd be more interested in the identity of the sneaky c**t that filmed it and ran to the Daily Record

Anyone getting offended at a snidey, nasty comment at an event they weren't at to the extent they're contacting police and the SFA etc need to get a fucking life.

I just think it's an unusual caveat.  Would you have the expectation that poor Ian Durrant would have to - in the interests of balance - to scream "f**k the Dalai Lama" into a microphone in front of a crowd of bemused knuckled draggers?

Context is absolutely everything.

'f**k the pope' in isolation in among that crowd is obviously a wind-up aimed at encouraging tribal hatred of catholics - it would be different if it was said by a Vatican cardinal disagreeing with some internal church policy, or by Richard Dawkins arguing about the existence of God, or by Sinead o' Connor disagreeing with catholic policies regarding women and child abuse - because it's obvious in the latter three cases that their audience won't use their words as some sort of validation to go out and abuse, discriminate against, assault or murder people on the grounds of their religion. This isn't the case when it comes to a gathering of Rangers fans - it's the easiest thing in the world to go to the most popular Rangers fan forums on the internet and see sectarian attitudes, slurs and even support of anticatholic death squads on display.

If you're going to make reasoned and non-bigoted criticisms of the Pope in front of a crowd of bigoted sectarian knuckledraggers, you might want to do *something* do distance yourself from the charge that you're an anticatholic bigot or that anticatholic bigotry is okay. One such (rather silly) suggestion is to insult the queen or, more sensibly, to put the remarks in the context of a general attack on ALL religion. Another one would be to actually explain whatever excellent reasons for disapproving of the pope you might happen to have. But every sentient creature in Scotland knows that what was going on here was a Rangers player getting a crowd on his side by mindlessly parroting their hateful bigotry so that's all moot.

Barry Ferguson getting off lightly for his idiotic "f**k the SFA" remark thanks to Ian Durrant being even more of a cretin.

Barry Ferguson is one of the few people/organizations in this country with less integrity than the SFA which is some achievement.

I'd say singling out the head of the Kafflick church for abuse while leaving the heid of the Proddy's was perhaps showing his religious allegiances, wouldn't you, Estragon?

Not quite the same: The Queen AFAIK isn't head of the Protestant faith – she leads the Church of England only. (She has obviously a significant non-religious role too, unlike the Pope).
