I've never quite grasped the reasoning behind the wearing mask in public thing that you often see Chinese tourists doing.  I once saw a bunch of them walking around Aviemore in masks a while ago - I doubt there's a town in Britain with cleaner air!

A lot of it is about not spreading your own bugs if you have a cold. Heard that blowing your nose in a hanky is considered revolting behaviour in Japan, you're expected to let it run till you find a toilet.

I was in Iceland (the country, not the frozen food shop) in November, and this was rife. Groups of Asian tourists wandering about with face masks, in arguably the least polluted country on the planet.

A lot of it is about not spreading your own bugs if you have a cold. Heard that blowing your nose in a hanky is considered revolting behaviour in Japan, you're expected to let it run till you find a toilet.

It's probably more sensible than keeping the germs in a reusable piece of cloth in your pocket when you stop and think about it.
