He was another player who didn't always make himself available though. Very rarely played in friendlies. Ferguson won 11 caps in friendlies across an 11 year international career. Fletcher has 28 caps in friendlies in his 14 years.

Ferugson was on pain killers most of the second half of his career and had to manage his playing time.

It goes to explain his relative lack of caps though. Well, that plus the fact he ended up with a life ban.

In terms of performances in a Scotland jersey McFadden would be up there. 15 goals in 48 games and numerous assists.

He was  (quite literally) dialing it in towards the end, though.  That game when he was playing with his phone in the dugout springs to mind.  Was it Lichtenstein?  They won with  a McManus header about five minutes into injury time, and McFadden could have made it plainer he couldn't give a damn.  Just a horrible night all round, as I recall.

He dined out on the Paris goal for a few years, definitely. But dialling it in, no way. Watch the footage when he scored at home vs Macedonia in 2009 and tell me he didn't give a damn.

In the Liechtenstein game he was taken off at half time IIRC and there was a big spat about Levein using that game to 'show up' him and Boyd. I imagine that had a lot to do with sulking on his phone in the dugout. Truth was he was shite in that game and admitted as much later on.

And everything he has said since becoming part of the backroom setup indicates he is fiercely proud of his time as a Scotland player and full of regrets that it ended early.

I think a fairer way of putting it is that McFadden was very lucky up till about 2007, playing out of his skin for Scotland while not really doing much at club level. Thereafter he was mediocre for club and country. Sulky and petulant at times throughout, but never could he be classed as disinterested (like a Matteo or Bardsley)

We'd kill for a guy like McFadden just now. Not only has only 1 man scored more goals than him for Scotland since since the turn of the century (Kenny Miller, and the guy above, Ally McCoist, scored his last Scotland goal in 1996 and only scored 4 more than McFadden), he's also the (joint) 7th top goalscorer for the national team in their entire history.

He could also get goals from nothing, such as the goal in Paris, the goal at Hampden vs Lithuania and the goal at Hampden vs Macedonia.

Darren Fletcher had to stop playing for about 2 years to try and sort out his health problems and still managed more than wee Barry. Fletcher was everything you'd hope for from a Scotland player, attitude second to none.

Time for Liam Henderson and Jack Harper to be called up.
