Why do we name storms?

Derrick Ryall, Head of Public Weather Services at the Met Office, said: “Naming storms has been proved to raise awareness of severe weather in the UK, providing a consistent message to the public and crucially prompting people to take action to prevent harm to themselves or to their property.”

I can't find it a thing to be bothered about, and the evidence from elsewhere suggests it leads to less stupidity. So fairy nuff.

I can see it wouldn't be fun if your mother was killed by Storm Chardonnay or something.

I expect it'll be the first of a lot today - not many grass parks are built to take what's been chucked at them the last 48 hours.
