Suspect Device
Just got the phone call from AFC. We've been moved from F4 to G6. Utterly pish but I blame our fans for their apathy to the game rather than the SPFL. Simple fact is, if we'd sold our tickets, we wouldn't have been in this position. We're not playing a team we reckon we can beat easily and win our first trophy in 19 years? Not sure because I can't get into the head of someone who purports to support the team but finds an excuse not to go to an afternoon kick off at the weekend. lubo_blaha
In all seriousness, its our 10th semi/final appearance since 2014. Our home support has historically been 10,000-15,000 and we've taken over 10,000 on the 300 mile round trip to Hampden on each of these occasions and most likely will do again. No other club in the UK, and possibly the world, has mobilised (or has had to mobilise) a similar proportion of their home support for a game out of their own city this regularly. Admittedly, hundreds of clubs would like to have this problem but its apparent that semi finals lose some of their shine when you reach them every year, just look at some of Celtic and Rangers (I) attendances for them in their own city over the past 10 years. The 20k the club was looking for this was never realistic. People are comparing our ticket sales to Hearts. We have played 8 semi finals/finals since they last even reached a semi. Add in the fact that they're top of the league and playing less than a mile from their home stadium and you'll see that its a false equivalence. Add in our underwhelming season so far, fannying about with kick off times, having a shite area of the ground, £60 for a train ticket, families not going because its Rangers/Sunday night/hassle, the game being on TV , shite atmosphere at most games these days. Not saying that these are all valid excuses but they are all contributing factors.

I've seen this frequency excuse used a lot by Aberdeen fans, and also in reference to your support's poor turnout at the semi against us in 1996. It was nonsense then, Hearts fans 2-1'd Aberdeen that day, despite us having been in semi/finals at Hampden (one at Parkhead) in 86, 87, 88, 92, 93, and 95, giving lie to the 'bored with going to semis' line. It's the same this time. Aberdeen fans just don't tend to do semi-finals in big numbers. No real shame in that, it's a long way to travel, it's not cheap, you're not playing all that well and might get gubbed. But spare us the 'we play too many semi-finals' excuse. It doesn't wash. It is definitely a factor, as are the other points you've mentioned. We brought around 15,000 to play Celtic when they'd beat us 9-0 just two months before. We brought similar to play Hibs when we were languishing in the bottom 6. Our team is significantly better now yet we're not taking as many fans. If all other factors were the same but it was our first semi in 5 years then we'd be bringing a lot more.

red23
Will tell you why i'm not going, I've given up. The games a bogey and so heavily rigged towards the benefit of Rangers and Celtic, why bother anymore?
DrewDon
We were never going to get particularly close to shifting 20,000 tickets, all things considered. I was surprised by the amount of people who seemed to think that it was a realistic target.
tarapoa
Stat attack - LC semi final attendances over the past few seasons, we sell well for Saturday 3pm matches that weren't broadcast live - for the rest, the 10-12K mark likely par for the course.........and most dandies I know thought that beforehand and were somewhat surprised at the club picking that moment to perceive that they'd grown a set. Romeo
Why would Aberdeen ask for a 50/50 split with both the club and the fans knowing full well they wouldn't shift them?

We were all wondering that ourselves. That South African dude who's involved in the AberDNA seems an outgoing character - maybe he got involved and somewhat mixed up with finals when looking at previous demand for such occasions.........
