Stories from the Courts

Whilst "studying" history at uni, I came across the tale of a sheriff sentencing a serial sheep rustler (probably one of @Melanius Mullarkey 's distant relatives) to around 1,000 years in jail. The sorry sheep thief pleaded to the sheriff that he "didnae ken" the crime was so serious. "Well ye ken noo" replied the sheriff.

Dont think my ancestors were rustlers.

More rubbers or frottagers according to the family tree.

Incompetent thieves coming to court soon? - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-oxfordshire-45561404

Four thieves who tried twice to raid a shop escaped with only a single bottle of Lambrini. The raiders used axes and sledgehammers to smash their way into a Co-op in an attempt to steal a cash machine, but they were unable to remove it. They returned later to the shop in Woodcote, Oxfordshire, but their stolen Land Rover Discovery got stuck.

Police believe they fled in a saloon car with the bottle of Lambrini. The perry drink costs about £2 a bottle. The four people involved in the raids in the early hours of Sunday were dressed in dark clothing with balaclavas, with one of them wearing a baseball cap. "The offenders made more than one attempt to steal the cash machine, and their efforts appear to have been thwarted by one of the vehicles becoming stuck," said Det Con Dan Tibble of Thames Valley Police. They all left the scene in what appeared to be a BMW 5 Series or similar."

A burglar has been jailed after he was spotted on CCTV wearing a pink dressing gown.

Wayne Austin, 37, was sentenced to five years and three months in prison at Maidstone Crown Court on Monday.

He had stolen jewellery and a laptop worth thousands of pounds from a Northfleet home in August.

The court heard that on Monday, August 6, the house occupants headed off to a shopping centre and returned two hours later to find they had been burgled, with numerous items thrown around and drawers emptied.

Austin, of Princes Road in Gravesend, was arrested on Thursday, August 9, after he was spotted by cameras walking towards the victim's address before disappearing.

Half an hour later the same device pictured him - this time with an orange bag for life and a light pink dressing gown, that the victims said were theirs.

Detective Constable Steve Brown, the investigating officer for this case, said: "Austin has caused the victims to this offence a significant amount of distress and I hope that this sentence provides them with some reassurance.

"He cared little for the impact his offending would have on the people he targeted and was motivated purely by the desire to steal what was not his for his own selfish needs."

Hope the loss adjusters did them for claiming thousands for a £249.99 laptop from Currys.
