12-12-18 time to reconsider it

Recommended Posts

The league reconstruction proposals would have seen:

  • Three-league structure – 12-12-18
  • Leagues will be called Premier Division, Championship and National League
  • Top two leagues to split into three leagues of eight after 22 matches then play a further seven home and seven away games
  • Top eight teams to play for title and European places, middle eight to contest promotion and relegation in and out of Premier Division and bottom eight to decide who drops into National League
  • One league body to replace SPL and SFL
  • A pyramid structure for the entire game
  • Opportunities for materially increased revenues coming into the game
  • Substantial redistribution of revenues to lower league clubs

Given Scotland poor performance at National and Club level is it time to reconsider this format. The original idea was shelved by two clubs out of 40 clubs.

  • Everyone to wear clown hats at midweek games.
  • Foreign players to be handicapped to using one leg per half.
  • SPL & SFL to reform, merge with the SFA, and call the new organisation PISSFLAPS.
  • Top league of two clubs; everyone else into regional leagues (details to follow).
  • Oblate spheroid league structure, with multiple leagues running simultaneously through time travel.
  • Money to pour forth from every orifice. East Stirlingshire to be built a gold-plated, full-scale replica of the Colosseum.

No clubs have made objections to this plan. Something must be done, and this is something. You can't argue with logic.

Despite the fact my club were one of the two who voted against, I actually quite liked this idea. There's potentially more turnover each year rather than the same teams always struggling, there's more meaningful games, and combining L1 and L2 into one league is long overdue common sense. Most fans seem to oppose, which isn't surprising when you consider how ultra conservative most are.

Scotland could borrow the format from Rugby Super League here's how it works.

Super League regular season(Scottish Premier League)

12 teams compete in Super League. They play each other twice on a home-and-away basis, The team finishing bottom after 23 rounds collects the Super League Wooden Spoon. After the 23 rounds, the top eight teams carry their points forward and play each other once (home or away) in the Super Eights. A play-off series is used to determine the two teams who will meet in the Super League Grand Final to compete for the championship.

Super 8's

After 23 games the league table is frozen and the teams are split into "Super 8's". Teams finishing in the top 8 compete for a place in the play-offs, and all retain a place in Super League for the next season. Teams finishing in the bottom four (9-12) compete alongside the top 4 teams from the Championship, in "The Qualifiers" Super 8 group. These teams will reset their season standings and also play 7 extra games, as they attempt to earn a place in the following year's Super League competition.

  • Top 8

The top 8 sees the top eight teams in Super League play each other once more home or away with the points they earn in the regular season being carried forward. The further up the table a team finishes, the more home games they will play. Once the teams have played each other once home or away the top team is awarded the League Leaders' Shield and the top four teams enter the play offs to play in the Grand Final.

  • Qualifiers

The Qualifiers Super 8s sees the bottom 4 teams from the original Super League table mixed with the top 4 teams from the Championship. The points totals are reset to 0 and each team plays 7 games each, playing every other team once. After 7 games each the teams finishing 1st, 2nd and 3rd will gain qualification to the next year's Super League competition. Teams finishing 4th and 5th will play in a Promotion Play-off, dubbed the "Million Pound Game", at the home of the 4th placed team. This game will see the winner earn a place in the next Super League season, whilst the loser, along with teams finishing 6th, 7th and 8th will be relegated to the next year's Championship competition.

Championship (Scottish Championship)

Regular season

The 12 teams compete in the Championship. They play each other once home and away. Two points are awarded for a win and one for a draw. After the 23 rounds the top four teams play the bottom four teams in the Super League in the Qualifiers. The bottom eight teams play each other for the Championship Shield.

Super 8's

The Qualifiers Super 8s sees the bottom 4 teams from the original Super League table mixed with the top 4 teams from the Championship. The points totals are reset to 0 and each team plays 7 games each, playing every other team once. After 7 games each the teams finishing 1st, 2nd, and 3rd will gain qualification to the next years Super League season. the teams finishing 4th and 5th will play in the "Million Pound Game" at the home of the 4th place team. This one game fixture will see the winner earn a place in the next year Super League season, whilst the loser, along with teams finishing 6th, 7th and 8th will be relegated to the next years Championship competition.

Championship Shield

The remaining 8 teams in the Championship who do not make the top 8 will carry the points they earn in the regular season forward and play each other once more. The top four teams will then enter a playoff for the Championship Shield. The bottom 2 teams will then be relegated to League 1.

Result

This format would give every club something to play.  It would draw in people in the sense that there club would have something to play. Instead the current boring format. Which nearly everyone hates. Sponsors and TV would be higher as they would see a better tournament.  Than currently available.

Why is combining league one and two long overdue common sense?

Because everyone says they hate playing the same team four times (or more) a season, yet we've had this arrangement for ages now.

In the Premiership there is at least an argument that there's too big a gap between the top and bottom in a big league, but the gap between L1 and L2 is not that big. You'll probably say there will be lots of meaningless games, but that's because of the lack of movement allowed between the SPFL and the Lowland/Highland Leagues. I'd promote the champions of both each year.

I can turn it round, and ask why anyone would want to arrange the 23rd (or 25th) to 42nd best teams in Scotland into two leagues of ten?

Point one is what I have been told is on the table for the new TV deal

The names may change

Point 3 is the structure that's being proposed as is point 4

Are you John Hughes , the SPL and SFL don't exist any more!

He's quoting the suggestion made years ago that was rejected in an SPL vote because of opposition from Ross County and St Mirren (it needed an 11-1 majority). The SPL - SFL merger part still happened, as did the increased distribution to lower league (esp Championship) clubs.

If you you 'have been told' then they are just proposing the same thing that was rejected before. I'd be happy with it, but most people on here were strongly opposed last time.

Not necessarily against 12-12-18 tbh. And I'm not against splits within leagues at the end of the season to get the right number of games / create some more exciting games at the end. The split between leagues though just sounds fucking rubbish. Imagine you're one of the teams always sitting around 9th-16th in the league structure. Then who really gives a f**k if you're in one league or another, you'll just get thrown into the jumble and placed wherever you end up anyway.

There would be more games where something's at stake, but if you diminish the stakes, it doesn't really matter.

Given Scotland poor performance at National and Club level is it time to reconsider this format. The original idea was shelved by two clubs out of 40 clubs.

The main issue with this proposal, for me, was that the middle 8 would have points reset to zero after 22 games, which would be unfair on those doing better in the earlier part of the season and would see some teams with not much to play for if they qualified early for the middle 8.

I would address this by awarding starting points before the middle 8 begins based on pre-split league position.

You would normally expect 11th in Prem and 2nd in Champ to play off, so they'd need to begin on the same points; you wouldn't expect 4th in Ch to be promoted, so they'd begin on zero.

So I'd start the middle 8 with points pre-allocated as follows:

1 - 12pts (for team 9th in Prem)

2 - 10pts (team 1st from Cham)

3 - 8pts (for 10th Prem)

4 - 6pts (for 2nd Champ)

5 - 6pts (for 11th Prem)

6 - 4pts (for 3rd Champ)

7 - 2pts (for 12th Prem)

8 - 0pts (for 4th Champ)

But with an additional European place now, I think a 16-team Premiership becomes possible.

I would split after 30 games, with the top 4 playing home and away again for 36 games each in total, and the bottom 4 doing likewise.

The middle 8 could play each other once more in a continuation of the league and 37 games in total, or could divide into two groups of 4 and then a wee knockout competition.

The winner of the middle 8 would qualify for Europe in seasons where one of the top 4 won the Scottish Cup and so the European place would normally pass to 5th in the league; if any other team won the Scottish Cup, then 4th in the league would play off against the best team in the middle 8 who had not already qualified for Europe (to cover the possibility of 5th in the league having won the cup).

All these splits are confusing eh, I'd like to see the best 6 non lge clubs get into the spfl for a 12-12-12-12 set up , just 22 games and cup matches, have a winter break, prob international breaks too, and bad weather thrown in.  Promotion 2 up and down, the HL and LL champions come straight up. Everyone is happy !

22 games - absolutely. Less is more.

I'd regionalised from the top, though, with a 12-team East Premiership and a 12-team West Premiership, playing just 22 games per team as you say, then a winter break.

After the winter shutdown, the top 4 from each of the two regional Premierships would go forward to the National Premiership, playing eachother home and away to settle the European places and crown Scottish Champions (36-game season, in total).

The 8 teams remaining in each regional Premiership would play each other again, home and away, to avoid relegation (36-game season, in total) -

with the top East and top West teams at the season's end playing off against the National team who is sitting in the final European place, winners taking that European place.

Or, the remaining 8 teams in the East could play the remaining 8 teams in the West at home and away to complete a 38-game season, points being added ongoing to their early season tally, with the same European incentive and relegation disincentive as before.

Edited to add - it would be interesting to see separate West and East of Scotland cups, including all the biggest clubs, too.
