Dumbarton -vs- Montrose. Double Header

Recommended Posts

I know, I know, we should be using the Cup forum for this, but hey we play each other two weeks in a row so might as well just keep everything in one thread.

Montrose become the latest side to take on Stevie Aitken's promotion Lowland League juggernaut. The Cup specialist Sons will win on Saturday, before slumping to their usual league defeat the following week - but the victory will be enough to keep Stevie in a job for another month.

Jamie McGowan one million percent deserves to start this one. In fact I would give him a run in the team no matter how he does, because he's going to have to go along way to struggle as much as Grant Adam - and at least youth is on his side. We all know there's no chance of Adam being dropped though.

That aside I'm not sure I really care. Stevie's post-match against Stenny saw him near-enough raise the white flag and we'll just get more excuses post-match is we lose.

Carsy is back so ideally he'll get a start alongside Brad Spencer or even Ryan Thomson. Hutton and Carswell doesn't work. Hutton and Spencer hasn't worked over the past two games, yet Carswell and Stanton, Carswell and McCrorie and even Carswell and Sparky (slight issue at EEP aside) did work...so we may have identified where the issue lies. We all know there's no chance of Hutton being dropped though.

Big ups to DFC for making entry cheap. If it had been a bit more I'd really be struggling for motivation to bother with this.

Strange indeed how we've became half-decent in Cup competitions & abject in the League.

This is exactly what will happen.

Let's just forfeit the cup game and be done with it. What's the point of trying to win only to get to the final and aim for penalties right from the off and then due to the rigid shitehouse tactics, succumb to defeat in normal time ?
We've seen that shite last season and can easily do without it this season. League game vastly more important.

As it happens I think we could do with the cup break.

  • The injured players get a chance to recuperate ahead of the resumption of league duties.
  • Some risk-free alterations can be made to the starting 11 (the goalkeeper).
  • The 3 newest additions get a chance to further gel within the team (assuming they're not cup-tied?)
  • Another chance to improve general squad fitness without losing ground in the league.

I think two of them (Aitchison and Allardice) are cup-tied.

You think correctly.

I'm pretty sure Stewart Petrie said on Saturday that he would be using members of the first team squad who have not been playing to see if they can push for a regular start in League games.   The cup game may tell us very little about what will happen in episode 2.

This cup competition means very little to the Mo especially these days - just pleased we didn't end up in Ireland or Borehamto Death Wood or somewhere. Would be good to get a home draw some year though.

The Mo will almost certainly field a fringe side like they did at Cove Rangers but then again SP might feel the last two league performances weren't good enough and give them another chance. In other words anything could happen so over and out until Saturday.

I'm in the "not sure if I can be arsed" gang for this Saturday. Can't see SA having the balls to have a real good go. (He'll say he didn't want any more injuries, the league is more important, and it was a wee tin-pot that he didn't want to win anyway.)

If I thought my fiver was going into the SA Redundancy Fund I'd be there like it was opening time. Instead I might give it to Mrs C. at the Duck Bay in exchange for some garlic bread and a shiny penny in change.

This game is the last thing we need tbh. If we could (but we can’t), I’d field a team of trialists and basically throw the game, to alleviate the injury crisis.

The league game really is a must win, especially when you look at the following four league fixtures; three of which are away (including Stranraer, and we all know about our record there) and the Home game is against Raith. The other two away are Airdrie and Arbroath.

If we don’t win the league game, which I have zero confidence in, then we really are looking at being in some serious shit by the end of the first quarter.

(hope everyone’s having a nice day :))

I'm intrigued as to how you would set up on Saturday?

As things stand the match preview would be better setting out who can play rather than who is unavailable

That's kinda my point  I'd love a great example of how we can "have a real good go". We will play the players we have most fit (least injured).

Given almost none of our fit/available players are defenders I don't think we have any option but to have a go!

Indeed! I just hope some more of our players are up for it because we don't have the options to change much.

I'd like to see them go at it from the off - the way they did against Morton.  I know it will depend on who is available, but if we are lacking in numbers have we anything to lose (other than the match)? At least offer up some entertainment which has been missing for far too long. If we lose 3-5, okay, but not the boring "by a goal shite" which has become the case too often recently.

I'd set up to have a real good go, depending on who is available. Forbes to start, dropping one of the Glimmer Twins. Barr wide (ON THE LEFT). McGowan a must - let's see what he has. And Russell in the role Aitchison played last Saturday, hassling and pulling their defence all over the park from a central position. Yes, I'm missing out the back line but as I'm not sure who will be fit..... But if we play the game in their half does it matter? (okay, yes it does, but you know what I mean.)
