The Pedestrianisation of Glasgow City Centre

Recommended Posts

  • 10 months later...

Was passing through Sauchiehall Street for the first time in ages today and was pleasantly surprised by the expansive pedestrian space and even some urban greenery as opposed to the shan, loud, diesel-polluted mess that it used to be on a typical weekday lunchtime. Hopefully it will be the start of many more measures to end the antisocial, selfish and totally unnecessary practice of running a private car in Glasgow city centre for good.

The building over the motorway is potentially getting sold/knocked down and turned into this over-the-M8 park that was getting discussed.  More than a 50% chance of the building being knocked down.

The people wanting to pedestrianise city centres are office wanks or people that get the train in for a "day out". Try carrying all your tools and equipment to do a job for miles due to shit access to main streets.

Probably more qualified and get paid more than most office types, added bonus of not sitting all day every day in front of the same computer terminal hating life. Not everybody doing work out outwith an office is an idiot.

Thought you could arrange access with the council. If not a pram might be a good idea.

^^^ puffing fat mess found

The city centre of Glasgow is actually a ridiculously compact area for a city of its size, so if you're too unfit to walk the length of it to a site then that's your problem. There's absolutely no reason why thousands of people should have their lives shortened and degraded by the daily assault of poisonous air pollution just to suit your personal convenience. And of course you can always use the countless park and ride facilities to join said train into the centre.

Single-lane access for deliveries, emergency services, cyclists and electric taxis/Ubers etc. should be implemented - everything else should be for pedestrian use.

Sauciehall Street is an absolute nightmare at the minute, was on the bus a few weeks ago and sat for 5 full minutes 20 yards from the stop between Charing Cross/The Garage cause there was a Lorry on one side and a taxi on the other and no room for the bus/anything that wasn't a tiny car to get by. The idea was decent enough but the execution is terrible so far, reckon they should go a step further and ban anything that's not public transport and deliveries etc for the businesses. Shift the taxis and ubers to Bath Street/side streets would be a good start.

The issue is with people flouting the rules not with the set up.
