The normalisation of the far-right continues

I've always found it bizarre that Portillo successfully steam-cleaned his reputation with some folk just by hosting a few programs about trains. He was absolutely odious in government.

Bet Thatch would've had a whole new fan base among miner's children if she'd only hosted a series of Top Gear after "retirement".

He was still just as odious on his late night politics show with Andrew Neil, just managed to put it aside when dressing up as a children's entertainer for train journeys.

Finland has always had "a bit right wing" undertones but todays election results are really bad -

The right-wing National Coalition party (kinda like the Tories) won 21% of the vote, with the populist, nation-first Finns party (far right nut jobs)scoring 20%.  The SDP (middle ground existing coalition govt leaders) took 19.9% of the vote.

Turnout was almost 72%, so its not "an anomaly".

The two right wing parties will probably work together.

This is like one of the Farage parties getting 20% of the vote in a GE here and having some actual power - worrying.

I would bet this is a reaction to Russia ever more threatening on their border, with he sabre rattling. People tend to swing rightwards in these situations.

I think there is definitely a bit of that, but Finland has always had "a bit of the right wing" about it.

The outgoing PM wasnt particularly like as (a) she was female (b) she was youngish (c) she was photographed out having fun with her friends now and then..........shock horror.

Indeed. Finland sided with the Nazis at WW2. Of course, again, the Communist threat from Russia and the disastrous Russian campaign in Finland put them into Nazi hands.

The SDP actually got a bigger share of the vote than last time, unfortunately so did the other big two, taking votes from the minor parties who would have joined the SDP in a coalition had it gone better.

Finland declared itself neutral at the outbreak of war in Europe.

Initially the UK sent British troops (volunteers with Govt backing), and the Govt worked on plans for between 25,000 - 100,000 troops to Finland to help them fight the Russians;

The UK declared war on Finland when Germany invaded the Soviet Union, thus cancelling the Molotov Ribbentrop Treaty, and ending Russian-German neutrality pact. Russia became an ally of the UK, and thus Finland became our enemy as they were an enemy of Russia.

They were forced into German assistance by wider political events, and were not in any other way allied with German.

That alternativefinland article isn't the best. The guy it lionises, Samuel Hoare, was who signed the 1935 Anglo-German Naval Treaty (the "Hoare-Ribbentrop Pact"). It was widely seen as Nazi appeasement and pushed France into a treaty with the Soviet Union.
