Qatar 2022

That's correct, from 2019 it has been expanded to 24 teams and will be played in June-July. Gold Cup is also being played in June-July not throughout July.

Next year's Asian Cup in UAE is being played in January (it starts in a few weeks) but no date appears to have been set for 2023, possibly as a host has yet to be selected between South Korea and China.

Basically:

2018 World Cup ... 14th June to 15th July

2019 Asian Cup ... 5th January to 1st February
2019 Africa Cup of Nations ... 7th June to 30th June
2019 Copa America ... 14th June to 7th July
2019 Gold Cup ... 15th June to 7th July

2020 European Championships ... 12th June to 12th July
2020 Copa America ... 12th June to 12th July
2020 Oceania Nations Cup ... tbc June to tbc June
2020 Olympics ... 23rd July to 8th August

2021 FIFA Confederations Cup ... tbc June to tbc June/July
2021 Africa Cup of Nations ... tbc June to tbc July
2021 Gold Cup ... tbc June/July to tbc July

2022 World Cup ... 21st November to 18th December

Another step closer to a 48 team world cup. Final decision in June.

The FIFA Council has approved working with Qatar  to explore the possibility of expanding the 2022 World Cup to 48 teams through the addition of one more host country.
.......
Kuwait and Oman are indicated to be the current possible options to host games in 2022, but their stadium infrastructure is only briefly assessed in a FIFA report.

So we will be receiving more money and 16 more countries in the world will have the opportunity to participate in the biggest football event in the world.

Kuwait has 1 compliant stadium... Oman has no compliant stadiums although 1 isn't that far off capacity-wise, and the only notable tournament they appear to have ever hosted was the Asian Under 22 competition in 2013... Qatar has already been given permission to reduce its number of stadiums from 12 to 8.

Tournament is supposed to be getting played in 28 days to avoid worsening the impact of the December timing of the rest of football. Is that even going to be possible, with an extra knockout round?

Very idea that they might add 16 teams and an extra host country at 3 years notice simply highlights the extent to which FIFA now operates as a law unto itself - it will barely resemble the bid they originally accepted.

More along the lines of their position as hosts being the only possible way they could have qualified. Having said that they do appear to have some decent results recently.

It'll be interesting to see how many of their side in 2022 have only recently acquired Qatari passports.

They won the Asian Cup this year. They dished out a 6-0 pumping to North Korea and beat Saudi Arabia, South Korea and Japan, all of who are regularly at the World Cup.

Yes, quite a remarkable and sudden change in their fortunes considering they've never even been close before...

Not sure what the suggestion here is. It doesn't change that they will likely a decent enough team at the World Cup, and at worst no shitter than a lot of other teams.

Looks like the UEFA qualifying side of things is starting to come together now. Final decision to be made in late September for the format, so the draw might not be held until...end of euro qualifying?

The suggested format just now is 10 groups (5 x 5 teams + 5 x 6 teams). The 10 group winners go to WC. The 10 group runners up go to the playoffs alongside two unspecified Nations League teams.

As there's 3 spots left (13 total) for the WC, the 12 teams are split into three mini knockout tournaments. Win your semi and final and you go to the WC.

It does feel a little fudged but so did the NL in general and that seems to have been a major success so far.

Seedings will be a bit different again. At the moment Wales, R.Ireland & N.Ireland would be #2 seeds. Scotland would be a #3 seed. Our chances of being a #2 seed were ruined in Kazakhstan. We'd need several impressive results just to have a small chance.

I can't wait for Mongolia v Brunei! I hope it's live on TV over here?

Surely with Faiq Bolikah of Brunei being on the books of Leicester it's prime for being on Sky Sports main event. Also interestingly he's a nephew of the Sultan of Brunei.

Almost certainly the top two ranked sides from the Nations League rankings who haven't otherwise qualified. Probably fairly good news for Scotland, since we're in League B for the upcoming Nations League, which means we're definitely going to be in the top 24 of the Nations League rankings. Given that most of the 20 spots from the qualifying groups will be taken by sides from Leagues A and B, we'd potentially only have to be one of the best bottom-placed sides in order to make those play-offs.

It's better than nothing. The likelyhood of getting through a WC playoff is significantly lower than a Euro one though.

Presumably the NL playoff teams would be unseesed and play away from home (in the semis at least). I'm pretty sure the matches are just one leg.
