Belgium reserves 1 - England reserves 0.   It's almost like this has happened before.

This. Southgate will not want to piss off the EPL managers whose players have been selected to start most of the games.

It would not be a surprise to see this line-up.

Butland

Jones, Dier, Cahill,

Alexander-Arnold, Loftus-Cheek, Delph, Rose

Rashford, Vardy, Welbeck

That looks horrendous. I think Scotland would pump that team.

It is horrendous but that line-up would also highlight the real lack of depth and quality in this England WC squad. Keane's and Souness's brutal assessments were spot-on. All the media hype of of a new era for England is BS.

Oxlade-Chamberlain, Pope/Heaton, Shaw, Gomez, Mawson, Tarkowski, Barkley, etc are not top class. Then there are the ageing and injury-prone players that Southgate omitted - Clyne, Bertrand, Smalling, Keane, Drinkwater, Lallana, Walcott and Sturridge.

However, we should not delude ourselves that Scotland would pump them. We  lack strength in depth too, especially strikers and right-backs.

3-0 Belgium, Southgate to get sacked at half time and replaced by Nigel Pearson, rioters loot all M&S stores across the South East to nick waistcoats for their “cut out and keep sponsored by The Sun” Southgate effigies which will be hanging from lampposts by 6pm.

Completely pointless.

Not entirely.

This game carries the same FIFA “importance multiplier” as all other World Cup finals games, which means England will bag 2340 ranking points if they win, instead of “only” 585 if it were an actual friendly.

But that’s about the only thing it’s got going for it.

There must be a drinking game to be had today around the use of words and phrases such as "brave", "young lions", "there looked to be a bit of contact there Glenn", "courageous" and "2022" and "love train".

Any drinking game based on use of those phrases will result in alcohol poisoning, and probably death.

ETA, assuming Belgium win this, England's World Cup will have consisted of:

  • Scraping an injury time win against Tunisia
  • Seal clubbing the worst team in the tournament
  • Beating a totally unthreatening Sweden side
  • Scraping by a dreadful Colombia side on pens
  • Losing to a Belgium side (twice) that barely gave a shit about either game
  • Losing to Croatia - the first decent side they'd played in a meaningful game

Still, young lions, knighthoods etc.

Ian Wright’s lack of self awareness is laughable. It was people like him that dismissed Croatia FFS!

To be air to him, he sounded like the only one of them to give some credence to Modric’s remarks which I thought showed more self-awareness than the rest of them did!

It’s quite arrogant in itself to hear the remarks of someone like Modric, and dismiss them out of hand the way the media have in general.

I wonder who'll be doing the commentary as I take it Little Englander supreme Tyldesley will still be too much of an emotional wreck after his inevitable breakdown on Wednesday.
