Internet overuse problem

Recommended Posts

Is it true? there is an online behavioral disorder.  I 've read this affects normal living that may cause severe stress on loved ones, friends, and family.  It is like an excessive use of social media forms like Facebook, Twitter, and others. There's an internet dependency and can't go without browsing.  It can be common for teenagers like my niece.  But, how can a person control this kind of habit?  Is there a possible remedy for this type of disorder?

Was talking about this with some friends recently. People are doing less, losing their virginity later. Guys are getting erectile problems far younger. I enjoy my P&B but can't think where I'd find time in my life for Twitter, Facebook etc and using it would eat into the time spent doing actual stuff like sport, sex, socialising etc. Proper sci-fi stuff, technology changing human behaviour.

I listened to Jon Ronson's Audible series about porn and some of his interviewees said that this generation of high schoolers are having less sex and encountering sexual problems earlier.  Could there be a connection between that and increased use of pornography?

I think it's too early to say.  There are other big factors.

There's a whole load of people not doing anything unless it's on their phone/tablet.

They've been sucked into this social media 'life' where it's all about likes and shares and shit!!!! Makes them feel good so they want more. They've been convinced that everybody is interested in every aspect of their day to day life so they're duty bound to post it.

They feel safe, they feel wanted, so why do 'real' stuff? Why risk reality? Why risk rejection? The nearest they'll get to reality is watching love island or similar shite but its ok, they can film themselves watching it then get more likes and shares.

I struggle relating to it but then I'm too old and stuck in my ways. T'interweb is a useful tool. As is my phone. But that's all they are. I did once film something on my phone. Realised pretty quickly that it was shite and have never bothered since.

You see it all the time these days. A lot of people's first instinct is to get the phone out and start recording/taking pics. The thought of that never occurs to me. By the time I do think of it, whatever it was I wanted to take a pic of has gone/stopped

I watched Panorama last night on this subject. it was quite interesting. I guess it's on I-Player now.

That's probably where the impotency thing came from (Butterfly Effect?). It mentioned many of the stats came from the US military (maybe the navy?).

Walked by a white van yesterday with three lads in the front. Pretty girls wearing not that much walking about all over the place and all three of the guys were sitting in silence looking at their phones.

A sad victory for the PC brigade, no doubt.

There's a bit in the Butterfly Effect when Ronson is on set on a porn shoot and the actors are sitting there waiting to film a scene.  They are behind the camera while the previous scene is shot and they are all watching porn on their phones so they have erections when they need to perform.  Ronson noted that there is literally a naked woman sitting feet away from them but they watch porn on their phones instead.

Sounds strange, but perhaps the fact they know her and the fact she is there makes it a little too personal, where the porn can be seen from a distance, so to speak, which makes it easier to deal with? The emotional aspect maybe makes it more difficult to do a professional job?

In terms of the general topic, I probably spend too much time on social media, particularly when I am meant to be working. Facebook I don't bother with so much, maybe check a couple of times a day. Twitter I use frequently but mostly I use WhatsApp far too much, mainly thanks to a few various groups and my insatiable appetite for being a smart arse when the chance presents itself.

Ditched all Whatsapp chat groups as I found the number of messages and the time it took to keep up with them turned your brain to mush. Now use my phone in general much less and feel physcially much better for it.

I watched this too. It's frightening the effort that goes into sucking people into social media and getting addicted to it. I wonder what would happen if Facebook removed the like button and people just posted stuff up and nobody could react. It's narcissistic and drawing on a basic human emotion of feeling connected and rewarded. It's social engineering and mind control on a massive and uncontrolled way and is ruining the way of life of millions of people.
Anyone who spends lots of time just sitting scrolling though the feed liking things in a wee weird world don't even realise how fucked up they have become. It needs to be investigated and stopped and I think it will soon. I liked the idea of putting your home screen in monochrome so it doesn't distract you.
I don't see why the government can't force phone companys and Facebook to tell people that sitting on your phone is extremely bad for your mental and physical health?

That's true!  I thought about it lately because of my niece.  She's not even focusing on her school activities anymore and  always on the internet.  My sister would like to seek an online counseling for her daughter.  We just discuss this matter.  Although we are still thinking if my niece will be willing to undergo the process. I was able to hop on this site (https://www.betterhelp.com/advice/depression ) and hope this will help.  We really want a remedy and correct her behavior before she totally changes negatively.

A woman I know has a 16 year old daughter.  She was telling me that her daughter was going out on a date with a boy from school but was explaining to the mum that she has never really actually spoken to the boy.  They only ever whatsapp/snapchat etc.  Apparently she was really worried about the date because she wouldn't know what to say.

Turns out they got round it by spending the date staring at their phones anyway.
