Drug deaths in Scotland hit record high

Is this casual use of ‘recreational drugs’ the road that leads to the use of hard drugs, addiction and dependency then the inevitable destruction it brings? I don’t know the true answer to that, but it sure can’t help.
 

I think it’s more likely the decimation of communities, deindustrialisation, and a lack of opportunities that’s to blame for the proliferation of hard drugs like heroin and the like more than 9-5 workers smashing coke and MDMA at the weekends chasing a bigger high. That’s just from my own experiences of living in a post-hope shithole and going clubbing a lot though.

I really don't understand why - the failure of drugs policy goes way back - long before the SNP government. The politicisation of the issue is not going to help matters at all.

The last few days have been Labour forgetting they had decades to tackle the problem, instead acting like it’s only been an issue since 2007.

Everyone in Scottish politics should be embarrassed that it’s got to this stage.

Labour and the other opposition parties were drawing up a no confidence vote which would have succeeded because the SNP are a minority government. Sturgeon’s choice was sack him now or have him unceremoniously removed next week.

The problem goes back to Thatcher removing the likelihood for some sections of our society to have jobs

They should, but take it on the chin. Harking back 13 years and saying it's their fault too isn't a good look.

Cheap as f**k to make and easy enough to do in cottage industries with no pharmaceutical oversight etc and quite readily adulterated with shite which causes the deaths. Dealers arent really doing much except punting the stuff but theres a shorter supply chain than say heroin which obviously comes from much further afield. The sad thing is and i can only speak from things ive heard is that in some areas when there is a death from street valium demand goes up as people perceive it to be ‘better quality’?

I have always felt there should be three people in the distractive path of drugs, those who take it are innocent especially those with addiction issues but the manufacturing should be a separate crime (I believe its lumped in with dealing) and then dealing carck down on the former and educate and help the users than we will be improving the lives of those who deserve it and locking up the folk who are ruining them.

The talk to frank site is good but are people going to be popping on there to have a look at what markings to look at on the valium before taking them, I doubt it.

What's it going to take to reform drug laws in this country? Genuinely want to know what the tipping point is because we've been beyond what is acceptable for most of my life and nobody seems to give a f**k aside from when these articles hit the news and we get every politician telling us how terrible it is, but do absolutely f**k all to change it. Depressing.

Out of interest, what do you mean by this? Genuine naivety/curiosity, not asked in an arsey way. I'm very ill informed on this subject. Are we talking drug legalisation?

Probably referring to things like drug decriminalisation & SIS (supervised injection sites) which would be illegal under the current UK laws as layed out in acts such as the Misuse of Drugs Act 1971 & it's amemdments since.
