Figures released have shown that drug related deaths in Scotland have reached record levels, with 934 deaths being attributed to illegal drug usage across the country in 2017.

Not far off the figures for Coronavirus this year.  Such an overrated problem.

And you're gone.

This latest spate in spam is quite mystifying. This account started up several months ago and didn't even post any links for a while. And on the surface, they sound quite legit - as if they're trying to help. The fact that they keep posting links and never choose their favourite team is what usually outs them (I was going to say and never talks about football, but you can level that accusation at me). What's the deal here? Are they getting paid to boost page rankings or something? Maybe @Mr X can clarify.

What's that you say, @Cardinal Richelieu?

*No chosen team.

*Never posts about football.

*Posts links.

<<<Worried.

What you did there. I seen it...

These bots are probably drug dealers who know P&B is a prime hotbed of weekend powder sniffers and pill poppers. (For full time smackheads see Hibs thread and Throbber).

They first make people aware that help is out there, then start punting them their gear and use raising awareness of addiction support as their caveat to pedal their wares.

That’s how I roll anyway. Wanting anything?

Pigeonholing the demographic of P&B would be nigh on impossible without years of studeous research and analysis. Just listing the Poster categories would be a tough ask....

VLs, perverts, Alcoholics, insomniacs, bigots, serial killers, Da's, puddle drinkers, psychopaths, sociopaths, narcissists, drug users (various scales of usage), pseudo intellectuals, Communists, Fascists, Socialists, Centrists, Conservatives, Nationalists......this list is non exhaustive!

After a big delay in the release of the figures, it's been announced today that 1,264 people died due to drugs misuse in 2019.  This is a 6% rise on 2018 and double the figures for 2014.

This table is frankly astounding

Incredible figures. We should definitely do something about this.

My suggestion is that we should treat this like a military invasion. We could perhaps call it 'the war on drugs'.

I'd suggest legalising the use of illicit drugs, following leads from  countries like Portugal that have safe areas to inject, clean needles, more rehab beds.

The Road to Recovery project that was a key government policy has not delivered.  Successive scottish governments have failed in this regard

We need to follow a biopsychosocial model approach, absinthe aims do not work.

Having previously worked in addictions for ten years and in custodial settings the present system just doesn't meet the needs of what is actually required.

Don't just give people a substitute prescription  then pap them back into their life of deprivation.  There needs to be proper behavioural support, peer support, opportunities for training etc.  Its more than just treating with medications, it needs life change.

Time for an urgent rethink.

are the figure like for like?  Does Scotland record death by drugs over-dose differently to all other countries?

That is absolutely horrendous reading. Extreme measures are required during extreme times. Making opioids legal with rehab consultation a la Portugal in the early 2000s is probably the option we need to look to.

Scotland also has a massive problem with cocaine as well. Need to get to the root of these problems for good. Definitely a health emergency now.

It will be even worse this year if America is anything to go by, heard a Senator for Ohio (I think) talking last night saying they had finally got their opioid epidemic under control last year, deaths down about 20%, but with Covid stopping therapy etc and the isolation and unemployment, its now back up to worse than before.

We could of course just copy other countries like Portugal where what they do seems to work instead of...instead of what we do now? Why do we not do that?

The classification and control of ‘controlled drugs’ in the United Kingdom is reserved to the UK Government.

I believe, someone can correct me if I am wrong, that it is because Scotland counts every death which could be caused by drugs (ie car crash with driver being on cocaine or aids caused by needle sharing etc), whereas others count those purely caused by drugs and nothing else. If I remember correctly, other nations would look worse this way, but we still likely be the worst overall.
