Bet you're all feeling pretty stupid right now.

It's taken a hundred years, but abolition of the Lords is coming! Tick tock! Best not leave your ermine robes in your lockers, Your Lordships!

ABOLISH, at the top of the article.

REFORM, in the middle.

THERE WILL BE A CONSULTATION, by the end.

I'll believe it when I see it.

Crazy talk. Everybody knows that you can't make laws in a modern democracy without hundreds of unelected (and in many cases unelectable) placemen and placewomen bringing their decades of experience of such crucial matters like giving money to politicians to bear on laws before they become law.

How on Earth will his Britannic Majesty know if it's ok for him to sign things into law without the advice and consent of the Lords Spiritual and Temporal? That way madness lies!

🤣

Get these chancers in the Lords in the bin.

Amateurs. Not a burning torch or pitchfork in sight.

Won't happen. The Labour Lords and Ladies won't let them do it, doncha know.  The unelected (including much of the press) won't allow it and if Charlieboy can't dole out gongs and "you've done very well" rewards to the not-so-great and the not-so-good, and sit atop an "honours" system, what is HE for?

Nice try by Starmer, but he knows it'll never happen.

I am no supporter of Starmer, but he does explain why he is thinking this. He is telling business to up their game and end low pay poverty.

It appears I may have to write this on the fucking moon in sparkly letters so folk get it.

THERE. ARE. NOT. ENOUGH. PEOPLE. OF WORKING AGE. IN. THE. UK.

Paying folk more, or training more of them, is going to achieve, nothing. Because there isn't enough of them.

Low skilled industry (and others) is just cannabilising resource from each other, driving up wages sure but then also cost, making these jobs non viable so the vacancies are being withdrawn.

Maybe like BawJaws Starmer isn't a racist himself but, he sure as f**k doesn't mind telling racists what they want to hear does he? The despicable c**t that he is.

They could triple the pay in a lot of jobs and still not fill the posts with good old British Bulldogs !

Genuine question, how much do you reckon you would need to pay your average unemployed Brit to work in a field, sort rubbish or gut fish ? No matter what the pay you are always going to struggle to get Brits to do this work mainly because the media machine and govt alike have spent decades demonising these posts and their holders. It's the work of FORINURS, not for us Jeff, with pay and conditions to suit.

If there were a single tory or Labour b*****d who came even slightly close to telling it like it is on migration and the lack of resource. You'd have a point.

And you may or may not have noticed that despite the pressure on worker numbers, there are still rather a lot of people in work and poor. Scarcity does drive price but only up to a point and as well as cost it also increases the likelihood of absence of that resource.

There's nothing quite so tory as "you can only have this thing, this service if you can afford to pay over the odds, and the rest can bolt."

The supply of cheap labour from Eastern Europe has already been turned off tbh. It's not just the wages either - remember the lorry driver shortage? Money was chucked at them and they still struggled to recruit adequate numbers. Covid lockdowns and particularly furlough have caused a pronounced shift in attitudes to working patterns and conditions and people aren't as willing to put up with antisocial shift patterns as they may have once done. Paying more might help but is no guarantee if the conditions remain undesirable.

It's also not been addressed either, but a lot of people have left the workforce for whatever reason over the last couple of years. That can't just be replaced overnight from the currently unemployed.

Add to this, the ever-changing visa rules. I hire a number of international people every year to undertake some roles (marking, mostly). 5 years ago they filled in a form and got paid a fixed rate per exam paper/dissertation. Now they get paid an hourly rate (which is utter peanuts), only allowed 7 hours per week, and have to undertake all kinds of paperwork. For a casual position that lasts a few weeks they have to get more and more paperwork ready.

What was a nice wee earner for some folk over Christmas just isn't worth it now.

Sick of these foreigners coming over and taking all our jobs we'd never lower ourselves to take on

Haw, Starmer, mind when some Unions amalgamated? Why don't you just become the Conservative & Labour Unionist Party?

As Orwell said in the final paragraph of Animal Farm:

The voters outside looked from Labour to Tory, and from Tory to Labour, and from Labour to Tory again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.

I'd normally want to avoid Orwell. But its absolutely spot on. Economically illiterate, dog whistling, scratch and sniff populism.
