Winnipeg the first team with their foot into the post season & barring a Falcons impression should wrap up the division comfortably.

Ottawa having quite the QB shuffle this season. Season starter Matt Nichols was benched week 5 for Dominique Davis & managed to wind up on the 6-game IL having injured his wrist in week 8 after replacing Davis. Davis himself is also on the 6 game IL courtesy of a hamstring injury picked up in the same week 8 game. The past 4 games have had rookie Caleb Evans at the helm who won his first game week 9 against Edmonton but has struggled since then throwing 7 INTS in the past three games. Evans was withdrawn from the game in the last quarter against Montreal & replaced by rookie Taryn Christion who ended up leaving the game after getting injured on a sack. Earlier today Ottawa picked up Tom Flacco the younger brother of Joe.

In a contrast of backups on the other side of the Montreal-Ottawa game Montreal backup Matthew Shiltz had an impressive showing. Al's starter Vernon Adams is on the six game IL for a left shoulder injury picked up week 10 vs Ottawa.

In an interesting move Montreal have traded for veteran QB & 2 time Grey Cup winner Trevor Harris from Edmonton. Going the other way is DE Antonio Simmons. Harris missed game time this season courtesy of a neck injury & has rather underwhelmed so much so that despite being fit was benched week 11.

As for Edmonton going forward it'll be Taylor Cornelius as starter.

Matthew Shiltz cotinues at QB for Montreal with new arrival Trevor Harris on the IL & makes it two from two starts this season. Montreal RB William Stanback had a field day putting up a career high 204yds rushing.

Ottawa bad. Another player joins the 2021 QB shuffle with Caleb Evans being benched during the 3rd quarter after 2 INTs. Taking over at centre was Devlin 'Duck' Hodges who joined the team last month & had been in the game prior on a few short yardage plays. Some of you may remember Duck from his 6 starts with the 2019 Steelers. Redblacks have made moves off the field with the firing of GM Marcel Desjardins.

Winnipeg waltz to the Western Division title in emphatic style meaning they host a Divisional final for the first time since 2011 & their first Western final since 1972. Highlights include a punt return TD by WR Janarion Grant & a TD by DL Willie Jefferson off of an INT. Between the defensive trio of DL Willie Jefferson, DE Jackson Jeffcoat & LB Adam Bighill plus their receiving core & star RB Andrew Harris Winnipeg look poised to win back to back Grey Cups. Harris is however currently on the 6 game IL.

Saskatchewan prevail against Calgary marking their first win against Calgary since 2018.

Edmonton on Tuesday picked up QB Nick Arbuckle from Toronto in exchange for a 3rd round draft pick & the rights to QB Chad Kelly from Edmonton's negotiation list. Arbuckle had begun season as Toronto's starter (missed first two games with injury) before losing out to McLeod Bethel-Thompson after four starts.

Wild ending the BC-Toronto game. BC kicker Jimmy Camacho had two chances inside the last two minutes to win the game but the first was blocked by DT Sam Acheampong & the second went wide right & was only good enough for a single which tied the game. BC would come to regret this as Toronto managed a TD & 2 point conversion (2 point attempts are mandatory in OT) with their OT possesion. BC scored a TD with only two plays but failed on their two point attempt. The win secured Toronto their first post-season berth since 2017 & are currently in pole position for the division.

Saskatchewan become the 3rd team to secure their playoff spot with games to spare. Division is however already gone due to the dominance of Winnipeg.

Hamilton & Montreal can secure their spots this week. Hamilton need to win or tie with BC to secure their spot while Montreal need to either beat Winnipeg or the more likely scenario of Hamilton beating BC. Hamilton beating BC would also rule out a crossover happening this season.

None of the West can secure their spots this week but looking ahead Calgary are best poised. Edmonton even if they win all their remaining games they would need to be part of a multi-team scenario to have a chance. BC need to win their remaining three games for 3rd spot which personally I can not see them doing.

Hamilton book their place in the post-season & also do a favour for divisional rivals Montreal as BC losing book them their spot in the post-season.

Saskatchewan win against Edmonton resulting in Edmonton going 0-7 at home this season. Edmonton scored late on but the onside return kick failed.

Duck Hodges gets his first start for Ottawa & frankly they should've won. The usually reliable Lewis Ward also conspired to miss 3 out of 5 field goal attempts. Ottawa D showed improvement forcing Toronto to the ball over 4 times. Toronto were bailed out big time by kicker Boris Bede who went 5 for 5 on field goals which he also managed the previous week. Ottawa were up 20-9 about half way through the 3rd.

Trevor Harris gets his first start for Montreal but Winnipeg prevail. The game was tight tied at 21-21 by the end of the 3rd but Winnipeg took control in the 4th for their 9th win a row.

For this weeks rounds of games Toronto can secure the division & home field advantage if they beat Hamilton. Hamilton can move into 1st if they win.

BC have a do or die game against Calgary. BC need to win to keep their playoff hopes alive. If they lose Calgary will secure the final playoff spot.

If Montreal lose against Winnipeg they will no longer be able to finish higher than 3rd. Winnipeg have confirmed backup QB Sean McGuire will start with the team having sewn everything up already.

If Saskatchewan win against Edmonton they'll secure second spot in the division.

Nothing left to play for the most part in the final two weeks of the shortened season. Edmonton's first season under the new moniker sees them finish with the wooden spoon.

Hamilton LB Simoni Lawrence broke the team record for most tackles in team history week 16 surpassing the 606 set by fellow LB Rob Hitchcock (95-06).

Montreal RB William Stanback finished far & away the rush leader on 1176yds. 2nd place was 869yds by Calgary's Ka'Deem Carey. If this had been a regular 18 game season Stanback was projected to go past the 1800yd mark which has only been done three times in league history. The record is currently 2065yds set by CFL GOAT RB Mike Pringle in 1998 with Montreal. Pringle also put up 1972yds in 1994 with Baltimore during the ill-fated US expansion. 3rd place is 1896yds set by Willie Burden in 1975 with Calgary.

@GNU_Linux have you a link or a website for historical results? Trying to find out who I saw the Argos play back in 88. Sure it was played late July or August at Expo. Not sure who it was against. I think it was against one of the Rough Riders or the Blue Bombers. Crazy score which I can't remember but 35-27 or something like that. I think Toronto won haha

CFLdb is good for team records etc but individual player stats are currently under development & not as fleshed out as some other resources.

1988 Argos season in question can be found here

i want the Tiger Cats to win just because of Jeff Reinebold. love him on Sky coverage.

Agree. He’s a genuinely brilliant guy as well. I interviewed him a few years ago for a podcast I used to do, spoke to him on the phone for the best part of an hour from his home in Hawaii. He’s incredibly supportive of the UK NFL fan media scene, always seems to be on various podcasts.

Bold call by Hamilton HC Orlondo Steinauer to pull Jeremiah Masoli at QB for Dane Evans pays off. Evans led the team to the 2019 Grey Cup when Masoli was ruled out part way through the season & has starter level numbers. Will be interesting to see what QB gets the start Sunday. Evans also had a crucial tackle on CB Shaq Richards who looked to destined for the end zone after a TiCat's fumble. Big play from TiCats WR Papi White who returned a Boris Bede punt for 92 yards & a TD. Jeff Reinebold would've been delighted.

Out west another tight game like the semi sans the OT. Much like the semi the winning team had a ludicrous amount of turnovers this time six. This was far from the dominant display people expected of the Blue Bombers who've been on a rampage all season long.

Not long after collecting their wooden spoon the Elks responded with changes from top to bottom. Out the door is HC Jaime Elizondo after a single season in charge along with president/CEO Chris Presson & GM/VP of football operations Brock Sunderland. The team have brought in CFL stalwart Wally Buono to serve in a transitional role until new appointments are made.

Rumour mill suggests that the future of Montreal Alouettes HC Khari Jones is murky after the team crashed out of the Eastern semi. Would be a very rash move as Jones has taken the team to the playoffs in his first two seasons with a 17-17 record.

CFL CEO Randy Ambrosie has confirmed that league intends to have a the TD Atlantic return game in 2022. On Maritimes related matters Ambrosie also reported that an expansion committee has been established with the Schooners still very much part of the plan for taking the league to 10.

The Elks have appointed Chris Jones as head coach who had been serving as a defensive consultant with the Argos. Jones has 19 seasons in the CFL dating back to 2002 in a variety of roles winning four Grey Cups with four different teams one of which came in 2015 as head coach of the Elks. Jones spent two seasons as Elks head coach 2014-2015 with his other head coaching role being the following three seasons with the Roughriders also serving as GM. Across his five seasons as a HC Jones missed the post-season only once with a West divisional title, an appearance in the east & west finals plus the aforementioned Grey Cup victory. Win % of .589.

The Blue Bombers have made QB Zach Collaros the leagues highest paid with a one-year extension worth $550,000 which is up  $125,000 from what he earned in 2021. Lions QB Mike Reilly deal is scheduled to be earn $575,000 in 2022 but the 36 year old's deal will be restructured to a value below that of Collaros if he opts to continue playing. For a bit of context the NFL minimum salary for a regular roster player is $660,000.

BC Lions QB Michael Reilly has confirmed his retirement after 11 years in the CFL Reilly started out with the Lions as a backup 2010-2012 picking up a Grey Cup in 2011 only ever managing two starts for the team in 2012. Reilly moved onto the Elks initially in competition with Matt Nichols for the starting job which Reilly got courtesy of Nichols going down with injury remaining in the job through to the end of his stint with the Elks in 2018. In 2015 Reilly won the Grey Cup & also Grey Cup MVP. Reilly led the league in passing yards 16-18 winning the leagues most outstanding player 2017 & an all-star spot courtesy of not only leading in passing yards but also leading in both passing & rushing TD's. Reilly returned to BC for the final three (read two as 2020 was canned) seasons of his career where despite missing out on the playoffs both times Reilly capped his final season off leading the league in passing yards for the 4th & final time. Reilly across his career threw for 34805yds which ranks him 14th overall in league history. HOF beckons.

As for where the Lions go next Reilly's backup Nathan Rourke has been confirmed as the teams new starter going forward.

One of the major questions of the off season is who of Jeremiah Masoli & Dane Evans was going to be the teams starter going forward. That was confirmed earlier in the month as the latter with Evans penning a two year extension & free agency looming for Masoli. Ottawa & Toronto seem the most lilkely destination for a starting role in 2022. Ottawa were dung last season & had four different starters while in Toronto it remains to be seen if Dinnwiddie sticks with McLeod Bethel-Thompson going forward.

QB Jeremiah Masoli has agreed a two year deal withe the Ottawa RedBlacks. Recently appointed GM Shawn Burke knows Masoli well as Burke served in various roles with the TiCats during Masoli's eight season tenure in Hamilton. Ottawa were reported to be pursuing Chris Streveler who HC Paul LaPolice knows from his time as OC for Winnipeg.

Hamilton have picked up Matthew Shiltz as backup to Dane Evans. Shiltz showed some promising signs in his couple of starts for the Alouettes last season.

Free agency kicked off on the 8th. Here's some of the notable moves to happen thus far.

RB Andrew Harris leaves Winnipeg for Toronto.

WR Kenny Lawler leaves Winnipeg for Edmonton. Lawer led the league in 2021 with 1014yds recieving. The deal worth $300k makes Lawler the highest paid player in the league excluding QBs.

WR Greg Ellingson leaves Edmonton for Winnipeg as a direct replacement for Lawler.

LB Darnell Sankey leaves Calgary for Saskatchewan. Sankey led the league in 2021 with 97 tackles.

DE Ja'Gared Davis leaves Hamilton for Toronto.

WR Darvin Adams leaves Winnipeg for Ottawa.

DB Trumaine Washington leaves Edmonton for Ottawa. Washington co-led the league in 2021 alongside Hamilton DB Cariel Brooks with 5 INTs.

If you wish to keep up with comings & going 3 Down Nation is the best source for all things CFL.
