https://www.smh.com.au/sport/soccer/after-22-years-qbe-calls-it-quits-just-when-perth-is-basking-in-glory-20190425-p51h7j.html

Perth Glory are riding high after claiming their first piece of A-League silverware, the Premiers' Plate, which puts them just one win away from a home grand final at Optus Stadium.

But, off the field, things aren't quite as rosy.

The Hairdryer can reveal QBE Insurance, which has sponsored the Glory since 1997, won't be renewing its deal with the club at the end of the season. That will bring to an end one of the longest-running partnerships in Australian sport, let alone football.

It says plenty about the state of the A-League that such a loyal sponsor has seen fit to sever ties with a club it has been synonymous with for more than two decades, and even more when that club is enjoying its most successful period in a long time.

But a QBE spokesperson said it wasn't the Glory or football that was the issue. The company recently undertook a sponsorship strategy review and has moved into the arts and festival space after deciding it wanted a "greater gender balance" through its portfolio.

"After 20 cherished years with Perth Glory, and in line with the portfolio review, the end of this final series will draw the partnership to a close," the spokesperson said. "We wish them all the best for the finals and will continue to follow their fortunes with keen interest."

QBE did, however, extend their sponsorship with the Sydney Swans last year - after the "portfolio review", it's understood - through to the end of the 2022 AFL season.

Make of that what you will.

The Glory, for their part, are looking on the bright side and were made aware of QBE's intentions long ago.

"QBE have been fantastic for Perth Glory – through the good times and some not-so-good times and we really appreciate what they've done," chief executive Tony Pignata said.

"But, unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. It gives us an opportunity to go out [to the market] ... There's a lot of interest there, especially now that we're moving into Asia, we've just won the Premiers' Plate and we've got Manchester United coming in July. It's a lot of exposure for a potential sponsor, so that's exciting."

All in all a good season for the Nix reaching finals football for first time in like 4 years. Next season is an interesting one for them as Rudan is out the door plus last season of their license.

That’ s Victory away to Sydney next week with Glory at home to the winner if the Adelaide Utd - MelC game. Adelaide have 3 former MelC players in their squad, Goodwin, Jakobsen & .Marrone. MelC have 7 ex Reds, Galekovic, Jamiesom, La Rocca, McGree, Vidosic, Birighitti & Griffiths. Hoping Marco Kurz last home game in charge is a win.

Victory had a wee bit too much for Phoenix in the end, which is about what was expected. Phoenix gave them a good game for the most part though, and they can probably be reasonably happy with their contribution this season.

Watched the first half and turned it off after the first goal, its a shame for the Nix, they had a great season by everyones expectations.

Can see Rudan going to West Melb and taking Krishna with him

Thought a penalty shoot-out was a definite but brilliant ball from Goodwin to Diawara then his pass to Halloran and we’re off to Perth on Friday. Although we haven’t scored in any of the 3 games against Glory this season but we did hold them to a draw in Perth. Pleased that Marco Kurz last home game was a win.

Was quite happy to see Melbourne City papped out there. They were fucking terrible and have been terrible to watch most times I've watched them this season. The boy Harrison looks a good player mind you. Hope to see him move to the A League more permanently at a team who aren't pish.

As a Glory fan im glad we're playing Adalaide, f**k City, boring to watch and will play for pens. At least Adalaide will go for broke, should be a good match, I've already got my ticket for it
