There should be a uproar and petition if anyone other than Wollongong and Canberra get it.

You trust Gallup and Lowy to make a good decision?  to be honest, the expansion decision should be put on hold until FIFA kick their butts out of office.

Final decision on expansion not due until 31 October. Those 2 will only do what is in their own interest not the games.  Hopefully iot won't require a FIFA ban to remove them.

Where are you seeing this? From what I've read he's resigning, effective in November, with no ifs or buts.

More to go according to The Weekend Australian

Outgoing Football Federation Australia chairman Steven Lowy has hinted several business identities on the soccer board could follow him out the door if the corporate governance battle rages on.

As revealed in The Australian yesterday, Mr Lowy will end his tumultuous three-year term as chairman by not renominating for the position, blaming politics in the sport.

The FFA board, which includes business names such as Pendal Group head of equities Crispin Murray and Caltex chief financial officer Simon Hepworth, has been locked in a battle with wealthy A-League club owners, players and some state federations over control of finances and strategy.

Mr Lowy said yesterday the soccer directors would think seriously about their futures if mooted governance changes to the congress that elects the FFA board, that he believes would threaten its independence, were adopted later this year.

“The board is very supportive and our board understands the position I am taking. They have their own decisions to make by themselves and I don’t want to speak for them.

“Clearly the board has certain values and I would think that if there is a balanced outcome to the congress many of them would be pleased to govern under a balanced and independent congress. But if it is not then they will have some difficult decisions to make.”

The stoush has lasted for more than two years and has resulted in threats by world governing body FIFA to turf the board out if a compromise cannot be reached on the composition of the congress.

Mr Lowy and the board have rejected recommendations that would increase the voting power of A-League owners and players, which the former Westfield co-chief executive claims will mean the clubs and players, plus two states, would control the congress if they voted as a block.

“The independence required to make decisions is significantly compromised where the professional game has significant control over the appointment and removal of directors.”

Mr Lowy’s term was to finish this year, as was the term of current director and lawyer Danny Moulis, a former Socceroo. There are also two vacancies.

Other directors are Melbourne lawyer Chris Nikou, ex-NAB executive Joseph Heal and ex-Commonwealth Bank institutional banking head Kelly Bayer Rosmarin.

First half of the FFA Cup round of 16 tonight. Avondale (NPL Vic) v Devonport City (NPL Tas), Broadmeadow Magic (NPL NNSW) v Bentleigh Greens (NPL Vic), Cairns FC (NPL Qld) v Sydney FC and APIA Leichhardt Tigers (NPL NSW) v Melbourne Victory, the main TV game. Apia finished 2nd in the NSW NPL but lost in the Elimination Final last weekend but get a 2nd chance to progress further next weekend. They might cause an upset tonight but don't think so. Would be good to see Devonport goind further and drawing an A-League side at home.

Bit of overkill or good marketing. Central Coast Mariners have a pre-season friendly on Friday against a Central Coast Select. Game has been moved from a training ground to CCM's stadium in Gosford and will be televised live on Fox Sports. Just because Usain Bolt will be playing for some of the game.

What's your opinion on bolt? What the league needs or a waste of money?

Should CCM be spending that money on youth and unearthing npl players?

Don't think it's costing them anything. All paid by Bolts sponsors. CCM will probably be ahead financially if it boosts their crowds.

Based on his showing on Friday, he's not a footballer.

Seems like a good deal by CCM as Ross McCormick saying he would like to play with Bolt at CCM, and Tommy Oar now being linked with CCM.

If they pull off McCormick and Oar that would be two very good players for CCM

The FFA are bringing forward the date for the two expansion teams before the AGM.

Wonder if its to take the franchise fees before FIFA take over?

It will be so they can lump another Melbourne and Sydney club on us.

Music during goal kicks and corners at matches and even controlled use of flares will be on trial during the A-League season's first month to attract fans.

A-League chiefs will trial a suite of new entertainment across the first month of the season to win fans back to the competition.

Safe smoke from flares in the stands, fan-zones modelled on the World Cup and lights and music during play are all on the agenda.

The league's Big Bash-ification is aimed to lure young families to the football after a year of declining crowds and television audiences.

A-League head Greg O'Rourke spent the off-season working with clubs and stadia to develop the plan to cash in on spiking interest from Russia 2018.

"We're fully aware of what the Big Bash entertainment product is and how it attracts young families. We need to make sure we're not closed off to that," O'Rourke said to AAP.

"But equally we need to make sure the things in our game that we hold unique will be maintained. We'll be treading carefully towards this to get the best of both worlds."

O'Rourke is adamant the new bells and whistles will be no substitute for what the sport does best: singing and supporting from the stands.

"We want to see the return and growth of active fans that have a large boisterous entertaining, standing, singing, chanting culture," he continued.

"We've been doing a significant amount of work with the clubs, the police and also the active fan representatives about what would be important to them to attract them back and to allow them to grow."

It's understood authorities and officials on both sides are keen to lift some of the more draconian security measures to make active support appealing again.

A new Melbourne Victory active group to replace the disbanded North Terrace would be a huge boost.

For those less rusted on fans, O'Rourke wants to make matches more entertaining.

Central Coast and Wellington matches will feature safe smoke after their stadiums agreed to trial controlled flare releases from the stands.

Other stadiums will follow suit should those trials work.

Most controversially, there will be music played with accompanying video during goal kicks, corners and substitutions.

"The plan is based on what fans felt was missing out of an end of season review," O'Rourke said.

"Fans wanted more pre-game entertainment, more in-game entertainment and more at halftime.

"Football globally has about 30 minutes when the ball is stopped or out of play. Some of those gaps can be filled.

"But not in the big derbies when you've got big active fans because the natural rhythm of the supporters is the strength of the game.

"When we're at smaller stadiums or bigger stadiums with smaller crowds, we'll use them."
