Various club name issues

There are 131 Junior clubs and 89 have a suffix

Of these:

14 are Uniteds

12 are Thistles (including Lugar Boswell Thistle)

11 are Juniors (where the plural is an integral part of the club name and not just as in Junior Football Club (JFC) and/or may be known locally as “XXXXXX Juniors”.

6 are Victorias

5 are Athletics

4 are Rovers (Ardrossan Winton Rovers, Buckie Rovers, Carluke Rovers and Kello Rovers)

3 are Rangers

The remaining 55 clubs each have a unique suffix.

Add to that 9 clubs that have a name that does not include a town/city/area

Add to that 33 clubs that have a name of a town/city/area and no suffix

NOTE: the allocation of these 42 clubs between the two categories may need to be adjusted as there are one or two that are difficult to work out.

What are on your difficult list? Glentanar and Benburb I suppose, named after places nowhere particuarly near their home ground?

The outside wall of our stadium has the sign "Rutherglen Glencairn Junior Football Club", however I don't think "Junior" is officially part of the club's name.
It's certainly not on any of our letterhead paperwork or our club badge.

Similar case with Dunipace.Having researched a bit into there history,Juniors doesn’t appear in their name until the early 70’s.

I believe Camelon intend to keep Junior in their name, even after their move.

Benburb - village in N. Ireland

Colony Park - is it not the park they play in?

Deveronside - the Deveron flows through Banff and MacDuff.

Hermes - named after a typewriter...?

Islavale - The River Isla flows through Keith

Rossvale - ?

St Anthony's - ?

St Roch's - ? the local school  is St Roch's secondary, maybe something to do with the area? Not sure which came first.

Vale of Clyde - the ground is in the Clyde Valley...

Gartcairn - is it a place? The only reference I can find is to the club.

Glentanar - one of the weird ones - Glen Tanar exists but it's an area in the Cairngorms and I cannot work out the connection to the team

Kinnoull   - named after the hill near Perth

Pollok - named after the leafy Pollok Park estate as the original ground was in it, on the edge of Pollokshaws. The 30s/40s scheme was built on land donated by the land owner Sir John Stirling Maxwell (also he who gave Lok the ground and the colours from his heraldic shield) on the other side of the estate, by which time Lok had relocated to Newlands

Sunnybank - They were originally Belmont FC until 1947. These days they don't play anywhere near the Sunnybank area of Aberdeen (relatively) though did play at Linksfield (now the Aberdeen Sports Village) in the 1950s which is just the other side of King Street from that area. I assume the name Sunnybank was adopted at a time they played there or thereabouts before Linksfield?

At the risk of appearing being daft, are Deveronside and Islavale not in reference to the rivers Deveron and Isla?

Yes you are right of course but I discounted them as they are not names AFAIK  of areas of Banff or Keith respectively. A bit pedantic I know!

Rossvale's named after elements of two street names in Bishopbriggs IIRC. The Ants originated as the boys club for the local RC church, and the area immediately north of Glasgow city centre used to be called St Rollox, hence St Roch's...not sure what version's the correct spelling, but they're from the same root.

I always assumed Hermes just did an  Ajax and named the club after a character from Greek mythology.

Interesting, wasn't sure of the link between St. Rollox and St.  Roch's.

St Rollox was a railway yard, my uncle worked there in the 40-60's

I don't know if there is a railway connection.

East Craigie was the name of the farm that that the team built their ground on and is in the Craigie area of Dundee. Although confusingly is at the western extreme of Craigie. I suspect it's because Craigie itself was once outside of the city boundaries and to the east of the the city.

Also a mildly famous battle, but the followers of St Anthony's would have been more likely to want to celebrate the outcome in a Govan context, so the name is probably related to being the village where some of the people who founded the club were from?

I'm guessing Gartcairn is an amalgam of Gartlea and Cairnhill schemes in Airdrie. Similar to other teams that have existed around the town.

Craigburn , Craigneuk and Petersburn or Petershall, Petersburn and z Chapelhall.
