Musselburgh Athletic F.C 2018/19

League match 21 and Musselburgh travelled to Coldstream. The quirks of the fixture set up and weather will see Musselburgh play the same team twice in succession, with the reverse league match in two weeks time.

Musselburgh supporters were in good fettle; cheering as the announcer named each Musselburgh player; then booed the ref’s name - which the announcer joked was half-hearted!

Due to injury and suspension picked up last week; three changes to the Burgh starting line up. Out went Gary Cherrie, Jackie Myles and Mathu King. They were replaced by Liam Gregory, Scott Moffat and Nathan Evans. Other injuries saw three of the Under 20 squad on the subs bench.

The first real chance of match fell to Musselburgh. From a throw in, Bradley Whyte played ball through to Liam G, who managed to beat the offside trap. However, Liam could not control the ball and danger was over. On 17 minutes Musselburgh had a corner. Michael Deland received ball outside box. His shot was saved by the keeper, Turnbull. Straight up the other end, Coldstream were awarded a corner. Ball was hit to the centre forward Briggs. His shot was turned away for a corner by Ally Adams.

On 19 minutes, Liam G fouled the left wing, Windram. Bright took the free kick which produced a good save by Ally. Fast flowing football, saw the ball move up the ring wing towards the Coldstream goals. Nathan’s shot went by Turnbull, but came off the post.

First goal came in 23 minutes. Turnbull kicked ball up park. A move involving several Coldstream players, lead to Lee passing out wide to Dixon. He found Briggs in the box, with the centre forward rounding Ally and hitting ball into the net for a 1-0 lead to the home side.

The left back, Herman had a chance to make it 2-0 a few minutes later, but headed the ball over the bar. With five minutes left of half a good move on left hand side of park, with a bit of trickery added, saw the left winger, Windram pass two Burgh players in the box, but the shot did not match his good play.

Half time: 1-0 to Coldstream.

First substitution of match came just after the hour with Windram replaced by Dawson. The second goal came soon after. On left hand side of the park, a Dawson pass was headed on by Briggs. The ring winger, Corfield, lifted the ball pass Liam Reid and from inside the box hit a cracking shot into the net. 2-0 to Coldstream.

Two minutes later from a corner, Dixon had a chance to make it 3-0 but Liam G cleared ball from goal line.

On 65 minutes, Ewan Ralton was subbed, with Daniel McBay coming on for his 5th appearance of the season; another Under 20s player trying to show he merits a first team sign-up!

Burgh were awarded a penalty on 70 minutes. Conor Thomson scored to reduced deficit to 2-1. Next sub for home team and Allan replaced Briggs.

On 74 minutes, Jack Gillan received a straight red card for a last man challenge on a Coldstream player. As play was just inside the Burgh half, perhaps a yellow should have been the correct decision, as there were a couple of Musselburgh players in close proximity.

Fourth goal of match came with 14 minutes remaining. With Coldstream were on the attack; Dan cleared the ball from the penalty area. But, in the next play, Dan then brought down a Coldstream player and a penalty awarded. Up stepped Dixon and it was 3-1 to the home side. Soon after Nathan Evans was booked.

Third Coldstream sub, saw Corfield replaced by Paterson. In 84 minutes, Nathan had a chance, but he skied his shot. Sometimes you know it is not going to be your day, and as full time whistle blew, Coldstream were worthy 3-1 winners and still in with a chance of playing in the top East of Scotland league next season.

Is the exhibition still on at the toon hall  ?

Its not in the town hall - but rather the Museum in the High Street (Opposite side of street - and about 10-20 yards to the left from the Sportsman Bar)

I think it is on each Thursday to Saturday until 8 June - 10:30 to 16:00.

All accounts (I've not been yet) is that it is a worthwhile visit.

League match 22 for Musselburgh and Coldstream, meeting for the second time in two weeks. Coldstream won the last fixture 3-1 to keep up their chances of a place in next year’s EOS Premier League. No match last week for the home side, whilst Coldstream lost to Oakley and Penicuik. The chance of direct promotion is no longer there. So, Coldstream now hoping to win their last three matches in order to finish sixth and a chance of making it into the Premier league.

Musselburgh made four changes to the last match. Jack Gillon suspended; Jonno McManus injured, with Ewan Ralton and Scott Moffat on the bench. They were replaced by Greig Callaghan, Jackie Myles, Mathu King and Scott McNaughton, in the starting line up for the first since 27 October, against Tweedmouth. Eight of Coldstream’s starting line up on 30 March remained in the team.

First real chance of match came in 13 minutes. Michael Deland’s shot was turned away for a corner by Coldstream keeper, Turnbull. The corner came to Nathan Evans but his header was weak and danger averted.

Three minutes later, Liam Gregory had the ball on the left wing. He squared pass to Conor Thomson, who found Scott McNaughton on the right. Scott’s cross, into the box, found Mathu who passed ball to Nathan. Ball returned to Mathu and from six yards, he placed ball by Turnbull and Musselburgh were 1-0 up.

Two minutes later, Burgh nearly had a 2nd goal. The left back Bright and Turnbull duffed a pass back and although Scott McN got the ball, the angle was too tight and he could not get the ball on target and it was cleared from the Coldstream penalty box.

Burgh did get another goal on 23 minutes. From Ally’s free kick, Connor found Bradley, who passed to Michael D. His pass to Liam G was played back to Liam Reid who then found Jackie. His pass into the Coldstream box was back-heeled by Mathu and Nathan’s shot trundled past Turnbull. Burgh were 2-0 up.

Coldstream nearly reduced the deficit. From a corner, centre half Straughan headed over the bar. From the by kick, the ball was slowly moved up the park, involving passing from Liam R, Bradley Whyte, Grieg, Scott McN and Mathu. Ball then played to Liam G whose forward pass was dummied by Jackie. As it reached Mathu, Jackie shouted for the return, which Mathu delivered. From the edge of the box, Jackie’s shot hit the net. After 26 minutes, Musselburgh were 3-0 up.

On 37 minutes good play from Coldstream’s left back Bright. From the edge of the Burgh box, his shot just missed the target and past the post. However, the ref deemed that Ally got a touch to the ball and gave a corner, but nothing came from that.

The best goal of match came in final minute of first half. This involved ball being passed around by up to six Burgh players. Greig then found Liam G on the left wing. His cross was headed over the keeper by Mathu, for his second of the game and Musselburgh led 4-0 at half time.

Ten minutes into the second half; Mathu was unlucky not to get his hat trick. The ball was played into the box, and Mathu, while just about being horizontal; got a shot on target, but Turnbull was able to save the attempt.

On 59 minutes, Coldstream were awarded a free-kick. Ally punched the ball out of the penalty area. The left winger, Briggs shot, but his attempt went over the bar. On the hour mark, Mathu and Jackie were subbed with Ewan Ralton and Scott Moffat coming on.

The right winger Dawson had Coldstream’s best chance of the match on 65 minutes. He hit a cracking shot from outside the box, but Ally’s save was equal to this as he dived to turn the ball round for a corner. With 75 minutes played, Bright received a yellow card for a challenge on Nathan.

Six minutes left to play, another run up the left wing by Deland saw a cross into the box. Scott Moffat’s volley just went past the post, with what would have been a screamer of a goal. Into the final couple of minutes and the right back Malcolm got a yellow for a hefty tackle on Nathan, which many fans thought should have been a red.

Match ended 4-0 to Musselburgh with Mathu King awarded the supporters club man of the match. Liam Gregory must have also been in with a chance of this. He was involved in all four goals and took control of the midfield area for most of the match.

Wednesday 17 April and league match 23, for both teams as Musselburgh travelled to play Peebles. The reverse fixture last November saw Musselburgh win 6-1 at Olivebank.

Due to injury and late call-offs for one reason or another, Musselburgh were down to the bare bones and all 11 starters played the full 90 minutes.  Jack Stewart, from the Under 20s, made his full team debut as the Burgh goalkeeper, Other than that, it was the same starting line-up as Saturday.

Match kicked off at 6:45pm and though there was plenty of attacking football from both sides, in the first 20 minutes or so, neither keeper had any real saves to make. Best chance of match came in 24 minutes. The ball was played from the Peebles half and it seemed that Michael Deland would get to the ball. However, he slipped and then appeared to hamper the Peebles no. 10 McMath. The forward broke free however, and as he came to the 18 yard box let fly with a powerful shot. Jack Stewart dived to his right and made a great one handed save, putting the ball out for a corner.

On 31 minutes, Musselburgh were awarded a free kick, 25 yards from goals. Conor Thomson took the kick with the ball going just wide of the post. However, the first goal came soon after. Conor Thomson headed the ball out of defence, which was flicked on by Mathu King. Nathan Evans running up the right wing latched onto the ball and placed his shot past the out coming keeper, Kerr, and Musselburgh went 1-0 up after 33 minutes.

Four minutes from half time, referee blew for a penalty. From a corner, the referee adjusted that the ball hit of Conor Thomson’s arm. It seemed to ricochet from his body onto his arm and though Burgh players protested, the decision was made. Up stepped Peebles no. 6 Lindsay whose penalty went under the body of jack Stewart who was very unlucky not to save the shot.

Half time: Peebles 1 – 1 Musselburgh

Second half kicked off at 7:40pm. First chance fell to Mathu King. However, his header from a corner was straight into Kerr’s hands. Ten minutes later and Mathu King had another chance with a header, which just went past the keeper’s post.

With 65 minutes gone, Nathan Evans had the ball and as he played it into the box, it intercepted by the no. 4 Lamb who tried to play his way out of defence. A mix up between Lamb and Lindsay, allowed Jackie to retrieve the ball for Musselburgh. He turned and from just outside the box pelted the ball into the net and Burgh were leading 2-1.

With 70 minutes gone, Peebles made a double substitution with Brown and Sclater replaced by Forrest and Mackay. Three minutes later, Peebles were on the attack with Mackay passing to the captain Zavaroni, who then gave the ball to Lindsay. He shot from the edge of the box but Jack was on hand to make the save.

On 75 minutes, Mathu King again had a chance to score, but his shot was just wide of the target. From the by-kick the ball was played into the Musselburgh half, with McMath again one on one with Jack Stewart, but the keeper won the challenge.

Into the last 10 minutes and Lindsay received a yellow card as the linesman gave a goal kick to Musselburgh, much to the Peebles player’s displeasure. From the goal kick, ball came to Lamb in the centre circle. He lofted the ball into the air onto the running McMath. Burgh appealed for offside, but play moved on. McMath squared the ball to the sub, Mackay who put the ball into the net. Another appeal for offside but neither the linesman, nor the referee was interested. After 82 minutes, score was 2-2.

Two minutes later and Musselburgh were on the attack, looking for the winner. The Peebles right back Mackenzie went into a crunching tackle on Bradley Whyte and was booked for his efforts. From the resultant free kick, Conor Thomson floated the ball towards the far post. Liam Reid rose to header the ball over the stretched keeper, Kerr. It was Liam Reid’s first goal for Musselburgh and soon after the match finished with the score:

Peebles 2 – 3 Musselburgh.

Final league match of the season for both teams. Win or draw for Penicuik and they would be Conference A winners. However, a win for Musselburgh, couple by a win for Hill Of Beath, at Easthouses and the title would go to the Fife team - definitely all to play for.

On the hottest day of 2019, Musselburgh made one change from Wednesday’s match at Peebles, with Ally Adams back in the side instead of Jack Stewart.

First main chance of the match fell to Nathan Evans. On 4 minutes, he received the ball on the right hand side of the box, but his shot failed to hit the target. Match was played at a high tempo right from the start, with ball going end to end. In 10 minutes, Stevenson ran down the right wing. His cross came to the centre forward, McIntosh, but his shot went straight to Ally Adams.

In the next attack, ball moved up towards the Penicuik goal area. A weak clearance saw Liam Gregory collect the ball. His cross found Mathu King, but his header was easily saved by watt.

On 12 minutes, Penicuik on the attack and a cross on the right wing by Caddow, found Ponton but Ally Adams saved the shot. Five minutes later, Michael Deland was fouled by Young. Conor Thomson’s free kick was deflected out for a corner. Ball was played short to Liam Gregory, who floated the ball to the far side. Michael Deland aimed for the net, but ball went sky high and out the ground.

With 27 minutes played, ball was deep in the Penicuik half. Nathan Evans dispossessed Stevenson of the ball and played it back to Liam Gregory. Mathu King was screaming for the ball, in the box, but Liam Gregory chose to pass to Jackie Myles, but another shot left the ground and score remained 0-0.

Good play by Penicuik on the half hour with Ponton, Jones and Baptie involved. The cross was met at the far post by Caddow but Ally Adams was first to the ball and the danger was cleared. A couple of minutes later, Stevenson punted the ball up the pitch for the home side. McIntosh past by Michael Deland and his shot came off Ally Adams and back into open play. As both teams contested the ball, it went out for a corner to Penicuik which came to nothing.

Another couple of chances came and went for both teams, but players went in at half time with score 0-0. Up at Easthouses, they were holding Hill of Beath to a 1-1 draw after 45 minutes.

Into the second half; on 53 minutes, a Penicuik shot was just cleared off the Burgh goal line. A number of home supporters in the main terracing shouted that the ball had gone over but play moved on.

First goal of match came in 56 minutes. A pass from Liam Reid was kicked up field by Michael Deland. Young was fooled by the bounce and the ball went over his head. Mathu King chased ball to the edge of the box and squared it to Nathan Evans, who laid ball back to Jackie Myles. His shot evaded Watt’s diving effort and Musselburgh were 1-0 up.

Penicuik made the first substitution at that point, with Caddow replaced by Simpson. On 59 minutes, as Penicuik looked for the equaliser, McCrory-Irving’s shot went over the bar.

Liam Gregory was substituted with Burgh’s Jack Gillan coming on. Five minutes later, Penicuik’s second substitute saw Somerville come on for Ponton in 66 minutes. Shortly after, Burgh were again on the attack, with Michel Deland’s shot kicked out for a corner. As it came over, Page rose to header ball out for another corner, but his heart must have missed a beat as it was close to being an own goal.

On 71 minutes, Liam Reid received a needless yellow card for kicking the ball away after the whistle blew for a free kick to Penicuik.

Even in the intense heat, the match was a great advert for the East of Scotland league, with ball going from end to end. On 72 minutes, Mathu King had the ball in the Penicuik area. What appeared to be a fair challenge on the keeper, Watt, was not what the linesman thought and from his signal, referee blew for a free kick for the home side. Penicuik went straight on the attack and Ally Adams made the save of the match, turning the ball round for a corner and keeping his team in the lead.

Liam Reid was awarded his second yellow of the match following an aerial challenge on McIntosh and for the remaining 17 minutes of the match, Musselburgh would play with 10 men. This saw Mathu King move to centre back. Scott McNaughton was next in the book for a foul on a Penicuik player.

With 12 minutes remaining, Penicuik had a throw in on the left wing. As it came into the box, McIntosh collected the ball and set up McCrory-Irving, who past Conor Thomson before stroking ball into the net for the equaliser.

From the kick off, Conor Thomson moved up field and was brought down by the Penicuik goalscorer. Conor’s free kick found Mathu King, who turned round towards the goals, but his shot went wide of the post.

Ten minutes remaining and Burgh’s second sub saw Ewan Ralton replace Scott McNaughton. With match in last five minutes Penicuik had a corner. Ball went over to the far side and Connolly had a great chance to win the match, but his shot (easier to score) went across the goal area and cleared from the Burgh box.

Into injury time and McIntosh played ball out wide to Somerville. He ran into the box and returned the ball to the centre forward, but McIntosh’s shot was saved by the legs of Ally Adams.

Full time whistle and with score 1-1, the conference winners were Penicuik. With Hill of Beath beating Easthouses away, the Fife side finished on 62 points. Penicuik’s draw, saw them finish with 63 points. With only losing one league match all season, Penicuik were entitled to celebrate as worthy Conference A winners.

Musselburgh’s performance with the 1-1 draw was outstanding, particularly following two earlier defeats in the season by Penicuik. Burgh lost 4-0 in the Qualifying Cup - round 2; and a 5-0 hammering in the first league match, in early October 18. For that, the supporter club’s man of match should be awarded to all the players and for the management team team who got the tactics spot on! As said by another Musselburgh supporter, when Penicuik drew level, even with 10 men, Burgh still went looking for the winner. Supporters will be rightfully proud of their team after that performance and for finishing in third place in Conference A.

An extra match takes place at Olivebank tomorrow night. Our under 20s team take on league leaders, The Spartans; kick off; 6.45pm. The first match between the two sides was 1-1 at the end of the March.

Perhaps a last chance for the home side players to say to Burgh officials, that they are good enough to be signed for the main team for 2019-20.

League campaign ended last weekend for both teams. However, there are still a couple of cup competitions to keep Musselburgh’s season going. The visitors to Olivebank for this League Cup 1st round tie was Hill of Beath (3rd v 2nd at end of Conference A league matches). In two league games and 3rd round of South Region Challenge cup; honours were even. Both teams winning and losing one match and drawing the other. So, another tight affair was envisaged.

Musselburgh made two changes to last week. Liam Reid was suspended, after being sent off against Penicuik and Scott McNaughton dropped to the bench. Returning to the team from injuries, were Jonno McManus and Michael Moffat.

First chance of match fell to Mathu King but his shot was blocked by an away side defender. The better option may have been for Mathu to try and go round the defender before shooting for goal. From the corner kick, Jackie Myles shot went over the bar.

On six minutes, the referee blew for a foul against Liam Gregory. However, Hill of Beath defender, Russell Grierson remained on the ground. Following assessment by the physio, Grierson’s match was ended and he was replaced by Kellichan.

One of the Hill of Beath backroom staff, said that Liam Gregory’s studs tangled with Grierson’s laces and his studs got stuck in the ground; (more later)

With 13 minutes played, Hill of Beath attacked up the left wing. Jackie Myles went in for a tackle, and ball bounced in front of Watt. His shot from the edge of the box was safely held by Ally Adams. Shortly after, Hill of Beath right back, Leishman was booked for a foul on Michael Deland.

Another opportunity came Hill of Beath’s way on 20 minutes. Elder had a great chance to score, but ball just cleared the bar. Another injury stopped the match with Greig Callaghan going down. A couple of minutes later, around 25 minutes gone, he was replaced by Jack Gillan.

Two minutes later, from a defensive clearance by Hill of Beath; Bradley Whyte received ball. From the middle of pitch he laid ball to Liam Gregory. From left wing, Liam hit a delightful cross over to the far post. Mathu King was there to head ball past keeper, Hall.

Musselburgh were 1-0 up; a score which remained until half time.

Into the second half and on 52 minutes, ball was with Bradley Whyte. He passed to Liam Gregory. Following further interchange between the two players, from the corner area, Liam Gregory hit a cross into the six-yard box. Another header, this time by Nathan Evans crossed the line and Burgh led 2-0.

With 56 minutes played; some of the home support were screaming for a ‘stone wall’ penalty, but referee waived play on. Soon after, Hill of Beath players were claiming ball came off the arm of a Burgh player. Again the referee disagreed, so no penalty and a corner kick was awarded; which came to nothing.

On 56 minutes, Hill of Beath had a chance to reduce the lead, but Mitchell’s shot was turned round post for a corner. With this escape, Musselburgh were soon on the attack. Ball was played to Michael Deland, who fired a cross to Michael Moffat on right side of pitch. Michael Moffat played a 1-2 with Jackie Myles. Michael took the ball past Patrick and his pass was flicked into the net by Nathan Evans, for his second. Burgh were 3-0 up after 68 minutes.

Two minutes later, Jackie Myles was replaced by Scott McNaughton. Then, Hill of Beath had men in attack. Kirby passed to Watt but his shot from edge of box was saved by Ally Adams. Leishman was none too happy as he felt he was in a better position to score.

Last substitution for Burgh saw Daniel McBay come on for Michael Moffat. Also in the 2nd half, Wright replaced Denton for the away side.

Into the last five minutes and Bradley Whyte played a great ball through to Mathu King. He headed down to Nathan Evans, looking for his hat trick, but his shot was blocked and out for a corner. With three minutes left, Leishman was again on the attack and his cross was punched out by Ally Adams. From this, a shot by Hill of Beath just cleared the bar.

Next play saw Mitchell booked for holding the shirt of Jack Gillan. Hill of Beath continued to press forward. In last minute, Elder’s shot was so high, it cleared the perimeter fence. Then in injury time, Ally Adams produced a great save from the boot of Leishman. From the rebound, Elder was there again, but Ally blocked the shot.

Final whistle and Burgh were winners by 3-0. Second round of cup takes place on Tuesday, 30 April with Camelon the visitors to Olivebank.

Liam Gregory was named supporters club man of the match. Bradley Whyte must have been in with a chance too!

On the injury front, both Russell Grierson and Greig Callaghan were taken to hospital - Russell by ambulance and Greig by the Secretary of Musselburgh.

Russell damaged his ankle ligaments and will be out for 6-8 weeks and it looked like a deep gash to Greig’s head would require stitches. Best wishes and recovery to both players!

Now that the league season is finished, cup matches are coming fast and furious. On Saturday, Musselburgh beat Hill of Beath 3-0 in the 1st round of the League cup. So, on Tuesday night, Camelon were the next visitors to Olivebank for the 2nd round of same cup; match kicking off at 6:45pm. Camelon last visited Musselburgh on 23 March, for the 3rd round of the King Cup. The home side won 3-2 after extra time.

Musselburgh made one change to Saturday’s line up, with Liam Reid coming in for Greig Callaghan. Greig received 7 stitches following an elbow to the head in a challenge against the Fife team.

First yellow card of the match needlessly went to Ally Adams for kicking the ball away following a free-kick – an event which was to repeat itself later in the half for a Camelon player.

Although the match started at a fast pace, there was little goalmouth action involving either keeper, in the first 15 minutes. Camelon could have gone one nil up in 17 minutes. Anderson picked up the ball in midfield, then passed ball to Docherty. He played round Jonno McManus but as he hit the ball, it flew over the bar and out the perimeter fence! A couple of minutes later, the referee stopped play and spoke to the Camelon centre forward, Sneddon, for an aerial on Jonno McManus.

On 22 minutes, Ally Adams was called in to action to block a shot from Anderson. Then in the next attack, Camelon’s Herron gave ball to Docherty just inside the Burgh box. As Docherty moved into the six yard box his shot came off the post and ran along the goal area and cleared. The centre forward, Sneddon was non-too happy as he felt he was in a better position.

First goal of match came in 23 minutes and what a cracking goal it was involving several Burgh players. From Michael Deland in his own half, ball was moved around the park with about 10 passes involved. Michael Moffat got the ball as he entered the Camelon goal area. Michael passed to Nathan Evans, who drove towards the by-line before getting the ball into the goal area. Who else but Mathu King was waiting to hit the ball into the net.

From the kick off, Camelon moved up field and following a challenge on Michael Moffat, Docherty was spoken to by the referee. The Musselburgh supporters could not understand why Camelon’s left wing was not booked. He did not have to wait long, though, as in 27 minutes following an alleged shove on Michael Moffat, Docherty was booked. However, home supporters standing behind the goal area said it was actually Jonno McManus who pushed his own player out of the way!

A couple more chances for either side came and went and in the last minute of first half, as the ball went out for a Musselburgh throw in; Anderson kicked the ball away and another stupid yellow card awarded.

Half time Musselburgh 1 – 0 Camelon.

Six minutes to the second half and a challenge on Michael Deland saw the referee speak again to Anderson. The Musselburgh fans were furious at the decision not to book / send off the forward. With 52 minutes played, Camelon were awarded a free kick in their own half. Ball was floated into the Burgh box and Morrison should have done better with his header.

First sub for Musselburgh came in 65 minutes when Jack Gillan replaced Liam Gregory. A minute later Michael Moffat was booked for a challenge on Docherty. Around 70 minutes gone and Musselburgh were awarded a soft penalty. A corner from Conor Thomson was punched back to the edge of the box by Shaw. As Conor Thomson came in, the number 8, Herron went in at full pelt and brought Conor down. Herron was booked for this. The whole Camelon team would regret the rash challenge as Conor Thomson scored from the resultant penalty and increase Burgh’s lead to 2-0.

As the match headed towards full time, the sub (no.12 – don’t know name) was booked as he and Sneddon sandwiched Liam Reid in a challenge. Following this, Bradley Whyte became the third Burgh player to be booked for a foul on a Camelon player.

With just over five minutes to go, Nathan Evans had a chance to get on the score sheet. He was in front of Morrison as he approached the box, but a great last minute tackle by the defender, allowed the keeper, Shaw to collect the ball.

Michael Moffat was then subbed with Scott McNaughton coming on. As we moved into injury time, the 3rd and final sub for Musselburgh saw Daniel McBay come on for Nathan Evans. The referee’s final act was to book the Camelon centre half for a bad tackle on Jackie Myles.

Full time and Musselburgh beat Camelon by 2-0. The supporters’ club player of the match was Michael Moffat. Mention for Liam Reid who had his best match for Musselburgh, particularly in the second half. Musselburgh are well served in that area with Greig Callaghan, Jonno McManus and Liam Reid trying to ensure they are the captain’s pick for each match. Jackie Myles and Nathan Evans must also have been in with a chance of player of the match!

Next fixture at Olivebank is this Saturday as Jeanfield Swifts are the visitors for the semi-final of the League cup. The other semi-final takes place on Monday 6 May when Bo’ness meet Bonnyrigg. Thereafter, the final will be on Sunday 12 May.

Third League cup tie in eight days! Following wins at Olivebank over Hill of Beath; then Camelon; Jeanfield were the next visitors to Olivebank. The quirks of this was; not only was this a third round but also a semi-final!

Burgh last met Jeanfield two seasons ago. A loss up at Jeanfield, saw Musselburgh relegated, from the Junior Super League. A 9-1 victory, in a cup tie at Olivebank soon after, for Musselburgh against the same team was no consolation to the East Lothian side.

This season, Musselburgh finished 3rd in Conference A. If Jeanfield win next week in their final league match against Ormiston, they will finish 3rd in Conference C. As such another close match was anticipated.

For the first time since 2 March, Musselburgh fielded the same starting line up for the second game in a row. Kick off at 14:34.

As with the tie with Camelon on Tuesday night, although both teams were out of the blocks quickly, no shots were on target in the first 10 minutes of match. Then, Jeanfield had a chance.

Fergus played ball towards the by-line and the no. 2, Reid, attempted to cross the ball over to Davis. However, the ball went over his head and Liam Gregory got the ball and passed it upfield where Nathan Evans was waiting. With Whitehead approaching, Nathan Evans’ quick movement found himself in the open and ball was floated towards the Jeanfield goal area. Up stepped Mathu King and one touch later, the ball was lobbed over the keeper Mitchell. Even before the ball crossed the goal line, the home support was already clapping and cheering. Mathu King, turned and ran towards the supporters, happy as Larry, and Musselburgh were one nil up.

A couple of minutes later Conor Thomson was heading towards the Jeanfield goals, when he fell to the ground. The referee’s whistle blew. Although Conor Thomson appeared to have been fouled, the referee produced a yellow card for the Musselburgh no.9 for diving!

From the free kick the ball moved towards Musselburgh goal area. From a cross / shot, there was a debate as to whether or not Davis connected with the ball. However, Musselburgh had a narrow escape as the ball hit the inside of post and bounced back into play, where ball was cleared.

On the half hour, Nathan Evans passed ball to the far side of the goal posts. Mathu King was there, but had to stretch for the ball. As his momentum took him towards the ground, Mathu King got another touch on the ball and it was put out for a corner. Conor Thomson’s kick was met by Jonno McManus. Mitchell saved at post, then had to dive to keep ball away from an incoming Michael Deland.

Musselburgh were on the attack again on 35 minutes. Mitchell again covered himself well by saving a header from Michael Deland. The ball moved into the Musselburgh half. Simpson swung ball over to no.15 Smith. From left hand side, Smith hit a cross into the six yard box, but Ally Adams managed to get hold of ball.

In last five minutes of half, the same two Jeanfield players combined; this time Smith passed to Simpson. He ran past Michael Deland then squared ball to Davis who was standing a few feet from the goals. Somehow, as Davis connected with the ball, it spun away from the goals and out for a goal kick. How the ball did not hit the net was anyone’s wonder!

Still more time for Jeanfield to get an equaliser before half time. The number 3, Kennedy had a thunder shot which came off the body of Jonno McManus. Dear knows how he stayed upright, but Jonno McManus shrugged it off like a true centre half with ball out for a corner.

Ally punched the ball away from the goal area with Burgh moving ball up to the other end of the pitch. Mitchell got ball in Jeanfield box and the away side were once again on the attack and another corner came. Ally Adams made another save. When the ball came back over, Musselburgh were awarded a foul. The referee then blew for half time.

Musselburgh returned to the changing rooms 1-0 up, with a number of Burgh supporters wondering how this could be!

The second half was delayed for a couple of minutes as a two year old ran onto the pitch wanting a game! Within two minutes, Simpson crossed ball into the Burgh penalty area. Michael Moffat cleared the shot from the goal line. Another opportunity going astray from the away side.

On 50 minutes Jeanfield were again on the attack. Another cross into the box from Simpson was headed out by Michael Moffat. Ball went out to no. 15 Smith (another Smith was no.8!) but his shot went over the bar. Two minutes later; Jeanfield had a corner. No. 8 Smith played ball to the edge of the box with Simpson waiting to shoot. Ally Adams, who had a fine match saved the shot and Burgh were still 1-0.

Ally Adams kicked ball up to Nathan Evans whose header found Mathu King. His shot from 30 yards just went wide of post. On 55 minutes, substitute Deans, brought down Jackie Myles just outside the Jeanfield box. Conor Thomson’s free kick was saved by Mitchell. Five minute later and Smith (15) passed ball to Simpson but his shot went just wide of post.

63 minutes and another Burgh attack. From a corner, Michael Deland hit a bullet shot which Scott managed to get a block on. Couple of minutes later and probably to shore the midfield up, Jack Gillan replaced Liam Gregory.

Musselburgh were again under pressure with 20 minutes remaining. With ball running out of play, Jonno McManus tried to shield the ball, but was dispossessed. Luckily for him, no.15 Smith made a hash of his shot.

With Jeanfield on another attack up their left wing, the referee blew for a foul against Michael Moffat, who was none to happy with that. The referee called Michael back to have a word with him re his petulance! From the free kick by Smith ( 8 ), both Michael Deland and Mathu King worked together to clear ball.

Into last fifteen minutes Michael Deland made another of his standard runs down the left wing and crossed ball towards Mathu King. Luckily for the away team, a defender slipped in to get ball out of goal area. Couple of minutes later Nathan Evans had shot blocked and out for a corner. From the corner, Nathan Evans got another shot, again blocked. Ball came to Jackie Myles, hoping for third time lucky, but the Jeanfield defence was resolute once more. It appeared that the defenders of both sides were more than matching the efforts of their attacking opponents.

On 80 minutes, Conor Thomson was replaced by Scott McNaughton. Just after, Deans was booked for bull-dozing into Jackie Myles; then Nathan Evans received a yellow for a challenge on Kennedy. With five minutes left, Daniel McBay was last sub on, for Nathan Evans.  Jeanfield were awarded two late corners and the keeper Mitchell came up for both. However, to no avail and when the final whistle went, Musselburgh had held on for a 1-0 win.

A very spirited performance from Musselburgh with Jonno McManus winning the supporters club player of the match award. Match was played at high tempo throughout, with ball going from one end of the park to the other. Burgh had a few chances to increase their lead, but in the end were thankful to be in the final.

Opinion from a few Burgh supporters were that this was the toughest opposition that Musselburgh had played this season. Jeanfield will have gone away thinking that had they taken some of their chances, a different result may have occurred! Best player for Jeanfield was Simpson.

Musselburgh now await the winners of Bo’ness v Bonnyrigg who meet on Monday night. Once that semi final has been decided, the venue for next Sunday’s final will be announced.
