East Cup of (Football) Nations 2018-19

Originally the East of Scotland Shield was all-in. (Worth adding it was initially called the Edinburgh Cup then the Edinburgh Shield).

It was separated into 'preliminary' and 'proper' stages in 1891. Then in 1897 an EOS Qualifying Cup was introduced instead of the preliminaries. Both adjustments aped the Scottish Cup.

Hearts, Hibs, Leith and St Bernards were joined by the EOS Qualifying Cup Semi-Finalists to contest QFs > SFs > Final.

In the 1904 the East of Scotland Cup was introduced and took the Shield's role (it became for Scottish League clubs only i.e. SFs > Final with Hearts, Hibs, Leith and St Bernards).

Hearts, Hibs, Leith and St Bernards were joined by the EOS Qualifying Cup finalists for 2 QFs > SFs > Final. However from 1909 those 2 QFs were scrapped as Hearts and Hibs didn't enter. (Hibs were relegated to Division Two in 1931 and Edinburgh City joined SFL so from then until WWII there were 2 QFs again. Edinburgh City weren't admitted to the Shield).

Edinburgh City joined the Shield during WWII to help make-up the numbers. However once they, Leith and St Bernards folded by late 1940s the Shield became for Hearts and Hibs only. (During the 1970s both Berwick and then Meadowbank were admitted to the Shield - as well as playing in the EOS Cup - but were withdrawn again from 1984).

Since 1990 the Shield has not been contested by first-teams, but by gentlemans agreements the sides involved have varied from 2nd XIs to reserves to almost all age-groups. Neither the 2016-17 or 2017-18 editions have been played which is pretty poor.

These days the point seems to be to qualify to play Berwick Rangers or Edinburgh City in a semi final. What would happen if, in the next couple of seasons, Berwick and Edinburgh City were relegated to the Lowland League and replaced, for instance by Shire and Cove Rangers, I. E. non members of the EOSFA?

Who would clubs qualify to play in the City Cup?

If there were no EOSFA members in SPFL except for Hearts and Hibs then, on paper, you have no EOS Qualifying Cup or EOS Cup.

Top information!

Presumably there are 2 physical trophies to play for and if that situation arose, I'd imagine clubs would still play for them.

Personally, in such a situation, I would take the 4 teams contesting the Qualifying Cup semis and put them back in again as the EOS Cup semi finalists. All hypothetical, of course!

Here are respectively the EOS Qualifying Cup, the EOS Cup, and the EOS Shield (ex Edinburgh Shield). Also pictured the Edinburgh Cup: won outright by Hibs after 3 wins, replaced by Shield.

It's worth noting that the EOS Cup is known colloquially as "the City Cup" - and that the trophy itself is the old Edinburgh 2nd XI Cup which was retired in Victorian times then dusted down in 1903.

As you say if worst happened the rules could just be tweaked and either trophy continue in competition as the East of Scotland Cup... There's no question the City Cup isn't the big deal as it is.

Bump.

Competition gets underway this weekend with what are now 16 ties in R1, plus a pair of ties from R2.

Following the incorporation of most of the former Junior football in the south-east into the senior game over the closed season, this is by far and away the largest entry the competition has had in its entire 120-year history. Penicuik Athletic last played in the cup in 1938-39, when they lost to pre-SFL Berwick Rangers in the Final. Towns making long awaited returns include Bo'ness (1938-39) Broxburn (1934-35) Hill of Beath (1904-05) and Dunbar (1981-82). Of more recent pedigree of course are Craigroyston plus Easthouses Lily.

Especially intriguing are the Lowland-EOSL clashes... Oakley v Vale of Leithen; East Kilbride v Jeanfield; Gala v Tranent; Gretna v Broxburn; Kelty v Dalkeith; Hill of Beath v Spartans; Whitehill v LTHV... where the lower-level sides will want to claim bragging rights as well as moving a step closer to the EOS Cup.

The clubs that jumped over from junior, for the most part, seem a wee level above last year's EoS clubs so far. So I'm intrigued to see how last year's juniors do v Lowland League sides...

East Kilbride v Jeanfield Swifts
Gala Fairydean Rovers v Tranent
Oakley Utd v Vale of Leithen
Gretna 2008 v Broxburn Athletic

Shocks aplenty today headed by Jeanfield thrashing EK at K-Park and Dunbar giving Linlithgow a hiding at Prestonfield. Newcomers of Inverkeithing dispatched ex-LL side Hawick, whilst the game at Newtongrange appears to have been of the proverbial "2 halves": seemingly Leith led and got in 1-1 at HT only to have 3 men sent-off and ultimately crash 9-1. Narrow wins for tier 6 over tier 5 were seen at Gala, Gretna and Oakley. Stirling won the university derby.

First Round
East Kilbride 1-4 Jeanfield Swifts
Craigroyston 4-0 Coldstream
Kelty Hearts 6-0 Dalkeith Thistle
Bo'ness Utd 1-0 Crossgates Primrose (aet, 0-0)

Gala Fairydean Rovers 2-4 Tranent
Sauchie WO-Scr Selkirk
Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 2-0 Hawick Royal Albert

Tynecastle 3-2 Easthouses Lily
Gretna 2008 3-4 Broxburn Athletic (aet, 3-3)
Penicuik Athletic 5-3 Haddington Athletic
Linlithgow Rose 1-4 Dunbar United
University of Stirling 4-1 Edinburgh University
Tweedmouth Rangers 0-4 Blackburn United

Gala Fairydean Rovers 2-4 Tranent

If you can't defend crosses and are profligate before goal you may lose unnecessarily. This was a lesson Gala learnt today as conceding from 3 free headers and missing 3 sitters saw them exit to Tranent, who were content to take their chances and otherwise weather - living dangerously at times - the Gala pressure and march on into R2.

Tranent took an early lead, heading in direct off a corner unchallenged at the near post. Gala almost equalised the same way minutes later, but struck the bar: only to draw even when a lofted cross from the right went over everyone and straight in. They then hit the base of the post with a low drive, the ball rebounding across the goalmouth and away, and failed to execute a good 1-on-1 chance. Tranent took the advantage by taking the lead just before HT, when after several blocks a well-placed low effort nestled in around a ruck of legs.

Second half and Tranent doubled their lead, by a lofted header away from the Gala keeper via a curling cross off the left wing. Both wingers of Gala then missed good chances - before their #9 blasted wide with the goal beckoning, then somehow fired over from about 3 yards out. Tranent promptly went up the other end and made it 4-1, with a copycat effort to their previous goal... it could have been 5 after they skewed a counter-attack wide and had another effort tipped over acrobatically. From here on it was mostly Gala, and after a sub missed a good chance they got back into the tie when an effort was blocked and the rebound got coolly trundled in off the inside of the post. They were not to get closer than this 2 goal deficit... first a volley destined for the top corner was deflected wide, then a penalty shout for handball got waved away, #12 missed yet another sitter by somehow deflecting it off Tranent's keeper before an otherwise open goal, and lastly another sub chipped the stopper but shaved the outside of the post. Tranent deservedly progressed.
