Inverkeithing Hillfield Swifts 0-10 Linlithgow Rose

Swifts faced one of the powerhouses of the former Junior football in their first-ever league game and the gulf in trajectory was clear. Rose dominated possession, and as the game worse on so the Swifts defence wore out. By the end they were being cut open at will with every attack - and only some desperate defending from the goalkeeper and centre halves kept the score below a dozen or so.

Great strides have already been made with Ballast Bank's facilities, and 200+ turned out on a pleasant night marred only by a brief shower on kickoff.

In the first half Rose scored 3 deserved goals, all well-worked with patient build-up then put it from close range; although the third was slightly fortuitous with the flick taking it beyond Swifts stopper, off the post, along the line and in. Just before HT the home side had a penalty shout denied, and shortly after the break a pile-drive required a headlong save from the Rose 'keeper to turn it around the post - perhaps if those had gone differently the final score might have had a different complexion.

Thereafter what had been largely one way traffic became a procession. Rose made it 4 with a power header direct from a corner, 5 with a lovely curling shot from the edge of the box high into the top corner, and 6 with some fortune after a lashed shot sprang back off the post - only to bounce in again courtesy of the prostrate keeper's head. Then it was 7 & 8 via two mazy runs over the middle of a crumbling defence, 9 from a one-on-one with neither defenders or 'keeper quick enough off their mark, and finally 10 when the ball clipped off the bar with the rebound neatly headed home from inches out. Somewhere in the middle of this the Swifts goalie had somehow leapt to get a hand on rasping shot and tip it over, then later skimmed another onto the bar, but it was a torrid night for him and his defence. By the end the post mortem was well underway amongst the back 5 in robust terms. If they have a consolation they'll likely face few opponents as daunting in the remainder of the season.

Late on Swifts had a spell of pressure and should have scored with a glancing header from a whipping cross that somehow landed wide... It would have been scant consolation had it nestled in, though, as a night to remember became a night to forget score-wise.

Thought Inverkeithing had a few boys overweight and unfit which was a surprise as I was expecting mostly younger boys. Lithgae miles ahead and seem to have clicked a bit more after a couple of poor earlier results

Shows it's not just Kelty that got a boost that way. In retrospect the move to a 16 team east superleague didn't work out that well for the clubs that were fixtures in the 12 team format as it diluted the quality with clubs that have little to no following. They don't seem to be concerned about the licensing application moratorium like Dundonald are on here, but maybe they got their paperwork in on time for that not to be a factor.

It's meant to be Dalkeith and Blackburn that got in before the licencing moratorium.

Others like Bonnyrigg and Haddington are known to have got started on licensing before that. It's unclear how many of the former east region juniors would fall into that category.

As for the moratorium, if i'm in the EoS right now i'm contacting the SFA about resuming new applications highlighting Selkirk possibly going bust. There's the possibility of an open vacancy in the Lowland League next year and clubs are handicapped in being able to apply for it if it arises.

It is and we're aiming to be Licenced in time to qualify for next seasons Scottish Cup.

Pair of groundstaff at Camelon assaulted by 5 drunk 16-18yr olds at 6 o'clock on a Friday. Abused, threatened with violence, spat on and pelted with cigarettes.

Disgusting and hopefully the culprits are apprehended. That said, if previous cases of youth abuse, vandalism and arson at non-league grounds around the country are anything to go by, I wouldn't hold our breath for meaningful punishment.

Preston Athletic 4 Blackburn United 3

Old Junior rivalries renewed after a gap of 25 years and that was probably the last time the Pennypit pitch was cut. Preston opened the quicker and scored twice, pouncing on a poor clearance to smack in a 20 yarder, before another shot from the edge of the area took a wicked deflection to send the keeper the wrong way. Blackburn started to get to grips with the conditions and drew level on the half hour mark through Darren Downie, first a fantastic header from a cross, the second when he was left in acres of space on the penalty spot and deftly chipped the keeper. Blackburn were in the ascendancy but as so often happens got caught right on half time when a 25 yard free kick was blootered at the wall and once again took a massive deflection into the net.  3-2 HT.   Second half Blackburn took the game to Preston but it was the home side who increased the lead via their No.10 with a lovely run and shot for his hattrick, but still we came back and scored with 15 to go via a Scott Wright near post header from a corner. Preston were defending like their lives depended on it and a fantastic last ditch tackle denied Hutton a shot on goal until the final minute of injury time when a long throw in clearly struck the arm of a Preston player but we were never going to get a decision from Mr.Gall and he instead blew for the final whistle.

Ah Mr. Jonathan Gall. I generally don’t comment on referees performances due to lack of linesmen making their job even tougher, but last night he had no excuse as he had the aid of two linesmen. It was the worst performance I have seen for many a long year and even the Preston boys (and the goalie) knew of his reputation. In the second half in particular he took to booking any Blackburn player who made a tackle, and it was far from being a dirty game, he compounded matters when we made a substitution midway through the half. The player coming off was frustrated at being subbed or his performance or both, he gets into the dugout and kicks a ball against the back of it making a clatter and sits down, something you see almost every game, no problems, no drama. That sprung Mr.Gall into action as he had other ideas, he came over & called him out of the dugout, booked him and as it was the second yellow sent him off.  The guy was doing his best to cause a riot, an utterly idiotic decision on the back of already bad decisions.  Someone shouted he should be embarrassed to take his money for this performance, he shouted back arrogantly he had already been paid.   Apparently this guy is “up and coming”, well God help us if that is the standard of refereeing we are going to have to endure. Remember his name, I hope we never encounter him again.

Decent team, very much play the percentage game of hitting the ball long into space, probably why the grass is so long. I sound like the Celtic manager. They wont challenge the top teams but the will be a contender for a top 5 spot.

Sent off 4 Leith players the other week. The games he refs generally just become a farce.
