Bo'ness United 2018/19

Loads more passing today with Andy Shirra on the pitch which was pleasing but oh boy did we miss Michael Gemmell prowling in front of the back 4. So many times today we were 2v2 and 3v3 at the back because our midfielders didn't respond to the danger. Fortunate we only lost 2 goals.
Up top we had several chances but too often the final ball wasn't the best.

Kegs fecked up IMO with his triple substitution. Wright for Sweeney made sense but did we really need MacDonald for Shirra and Hunter for El-Zubadi. We lost our shape and the initiative. It wasn't long until defender Hunter got in a defensive muddle which ended with him crocked and left to limp about up top. He cut off potential pass backs to the Haddington keeper but he was not capable of much else.

Overall a decent game with chances aplenty and the only surprise was no 2nd half goals.

Yes. He was off the pace, burst by half time, hasn’t played regularly for god knows how long, and his 10 minute cameo last week was never going to get him match sharp. Agree Gemmell was sorely missed today and unfortunately still without Dev who would’ve been the ideal man to step into Gemmell’s position.

This game merely highlighted our frailties in front of goal. Numerous chances missed through an inabilty to take a shot and instead we opted for another pass.

We certainly missed Gemmell for his work in front of the back four.

Why oh why is McKenzie not working his butt off in the box instead of making chances for others who are never in the position to score.  We cluttered up the box therefore no second ball to win.

Two points dropped.

A great game for the neutrals and the half-time score was about right.  Second half though and the old failings up top came home to haunt us.  We just could not score, no matter what.

Best performers today were Syme & my MOTM Will Snowdon, with good support coming from Prentice, MacKenzie & old-head Shirra.

Replacing Aldin with Hunter made no sense at all and the 3 subs at once smacked a little bit of panic.

I think Boheesian we all just need to accept that Alan MacKenzie is never ever going to be the type of striker we are looking for.     I have resigned myself to thinking that he is a physically strong wideman in the mould of vintage Chris Donnelly.             Big Alan is a good asset to have in the team but he isn't a striker and our friends in the West told us when he came something like "great guy who works his socks off for the team but he doesn't score anything like enough goals".    You always hope that such predictions prove false and the player will become a goal machine for his new team but alas it's not going to happen.    it's frustrating when you see him outpace, outmuscle and outplay fullbacks and midfielders but when he gets in front of the goals the end product just isn't there.

Once your 3 subs are on that's you gambling that you won't have any injuries and your goalie will stay on the pitch.   There was no need for Hunter to replace big Aldin  who was playing reasonably well.     Third subs are for the last few minutes or emergencies IMO.
