Suspect Device
Minimum alcohol pricing in Scotland had 'minimal impact' on crime - BBC News And surprise surprise they want it raised. I guess that if they raise it enough then it might just have an effect. Whether that effect will be the one they're hoping for is another question altogether. 65p is the next target.

Suspect Device
Surely it would be an additional benefit of people drinking less? The main reason would have been to improve health but crime is also a result of our relationship with alcohol? I would think that it would have been under social harms of alcohol. Quote The evaluation programme seeks to answer two questions: has minimum unit pricing contributed to reducing the health and social harms related to alcohol? Billy Jean King
Alcohol deaths at record levels. No reduction in crime. This is supposedly a success? The rise in alcohol deaths in 2020 is surely as a result of lockdown, they were on the way down before that. As for crime it's sole purpose was as a public health measure. Any result in crime would simply be a bonus. The fact the likes of Spoons still has beer at about £2 a pint suggests it not exactly onerous. Probably need to rise the minimum unit price in a more targeted way. -

Detournement
The issue with minimum pricing is that it's only targeted at low income people despite problem drinking being society wide.

Targeting rich people by increasing prices ? Rich people can afford the price increase so that will not stop them from being dead before they should be dead from alcohol abuse.

Wee Bully
It’s good to see we are back to the old argument of “Alchies will always find a way to drink”. The point of minimum pricing was not to catch those already addicted, but to discourage those who aren’t yet, and help reduce the chances of them become addicted. It is one of those rare policies where the main benefits are in 20 years time, not today.

Great example of confirmation bias.

BigDoddyKane
I dont really get that point that the price of alcohol is the deterrent to becoming addicted to it, education and less poverty must be the 2 biggest drivers. maybe im wrong but putting prices up so people who cant afford a drink cant enjoy one seems a bit class based if thats really their argument for doing it Edited October 15, 2021 by BigDoddyKane

Or, actually quite a brave policy for politicians who normally want / need an instant hit. It’s part of a suite of things aimed at reducing the harms from alcohol. Another one is education - nobody is suggesting education is going to change a jakies mind or behaviour. MUP is the same. -
