Danny Diver went to the press after he was freed by Ayr, mostly about how much he hated Daziel. He said he went in to his office that was in the portacabin at the time and he sat with his feet up on the desk. He proceeded to tell Diver about the direction he was taking the club in and that Diver was in no way good enough to play for the club. He said all he needed was a cigar. Freed in a portacabin by Daziel does sound grubby.

Most of the players we had at the time hated him, he fell out with every player that made headlines and there was rumors that he took the huff after fans started singing about Steve Kerrigan and dropped him.

Turning up clearly "tired and emotional" as the Daily record put it, to a fan's forum they organised and calling the fans arseholes forgetting he was miked up wasn't his best move.

I can remember that quote from Danny Diver being in the snippets page of a football magazine I used to get as a 13 year old or so - gonna say the magazine was called 90 minutes and the feature was Off the Wall / Ball.    But it had quotes from Diver saying Dalziel was a "Billy Big Time" and I remember the cigar and feet on the desk being mentioned too.   The tone of the magazine was that Diver was being a bad loser at being released and as a kid at the time i remember thinking the same but in hindsight he clearly had a point!

Met him in the Treehouse once after an AU victory - having chatted briefly I'd surmise him as 'Totally up himself'. He did well for us but he was horrible tbh.

When did he do well for us, the c**t spent a fortune getting us nowhere, we had to watch some amount of shite masquerading as senior footballers due to state Barr and Dalziel left Ayr in.

Only Ayr can have a sugar daddy that gives the family silver to a complete bawbag of a useless manager.

Those occasional good days out in no way make up for the years of drudgery that Ayr fans had to suffer following his departure.

How did Mike feel about it?

Anyone who actually followed Ayr through the Dalziel years knows the truth about him.  The number of players he fell out with speaks for itself really,  if it was just a one off embittered player like Diver, you could ignore it, but the sheer number of players who walked away or were frozen out during that period is incredible.  Barr’s willingness to provide funds to let Dalziel buy his way out of yet another man management screw up was absolutely bewildering.

Was it Danny diver we gave a decent signing on fee too on the basis he would use it to pass his driving test so he could get back and forth to the club then he allegedly blew it on other stuff?

A lot of fans backed DL as the results were great compared to what had gone on before. Tended to get a free pass instead of grief when you consider the budget he had at his disposal

The League results were average mostly, They should have been a lot better given the budget and players he had. The crummy league placings were overshadowed by the cup results. The excitement of constant new faces also made it an exciting time.

Winning 4 derbys also helped. He said he felt that he should be mentioned in the same way as McCleod at Ayr, he took Ayr to a cup final and second in the League. He was also paying higher wages than every team in Scotland outside the big 5. Signing current internationals and was able to field a British record number of players in a season.  He was able to bring in new coaches to help out when required and probably squandered more money in his time at the club than we have spent on wages since.

Barr was never required to stump up on the Stadium front in earnest so with a different manager and Barrs money, who knows where we could be now.

(Bankrupt or playing in a 3/4 empty all seater stadium in the Championship after a couple of seasons in the top flight)

DL managed to put together some of the best teams in living memory -a front 4 of Teale, Hurst, Walker and Reynolds - and the premier league class signings of Hughes, McGinaly, Annand and Gray, but managed to dismantle them just as quick.

As others have said the cup runs were fantastic, the league form was dreadful. The league season when Hibs won the league was probably the best team I have ever seen, only the team from 2 season ago have got close.

But as others have said, with the money spent we should have done much better, and it always depended on who his assistant was if we did well - Frank Connor seasons for example was excellent, but the style of play depended on who was in doing the coaching

What international did he sign?

Knudsen and Hansen of the Faroe's, Tomas Gill of Norway, Nylen of Sweden, Mohamed Syla of Guinea. There were probably loads more.
