Does he play out wide or behind the striker or slightly deeper... I can’t particularly remember!

For us Walsh was found mainly on the left or right wing rotating with Doran during games quite often. He did play once or twice behind the striker but he wasn't as effective. I seem to recall Dumbarton fans saying that when he played for them he was actually at his best playing in that 10 role but we seldom saw him play there.

Played almost exclusively at right back for us last season, although he was billed as also being a central midfielder.

I think I liked him more than most Rovers fans, and I was a wee bit surprised that McGlynn didn't keep him on. I suppose it's possible he wanted to but we were outbid, but I think it's more likely that McGlynn just wanted a more attacking full back.

As four goals suggests, Miller didn't do badly at all getting forward last year, but he always looked like a defender who'd been asked to push on rather than a natural attacker.

Wasn't expecting him to resurface in the Championship, but he'll do fine. Very consistent, unspectacular, although he did miss quite a few games through injury last year.

Think that just leaves us needing a GK, CM (2 at a push) and striker.

Think we’ll see a few loans come in to fill out those positions.

                     Gk
Houston Muirhead Bell Reading
        Murdoch Miller
Walsh McCowan Zanatta
                 Moore
Rest of the squad.  Graham Roscoe Ecrepont Hewitt Kerr Smith Moffat McKenzie

And sign at least a striker and centre mid.

Aye, I reckon the striker and CM could be loans and then who knows about the keeper.

This sounds almost exactly like Andy Geggan.

If you can keep Walsh fit he will be a great signing for you guys. Missed a lot of games for us through injury. It seemed whenever he was hitting top form he would get another knock. A really good player though.

Just looking at his stats he seem to only play a hand full of games 16/17 for Livi then nothing for season 17/18, then only 8 for Brechin 18/19 before signing for Raith. Was he out injured for over a season? Given he can cover a number of positions, he sounds like he is here as cover on the bench rather than a starter, but given he was a Scotland youth cap you would hope he is of a decent standard

Apparently Miller scored 6 goals last season, so maybe a central midfielder who can score goals will be a huge bonus.

There's definitely not many about and Kerr has stated Hare Reid won't be no 1 if he stays. Could be a left field signing from down south perhaps?

I thought he only got 5, one in the cup, 4 in the league. Scored 3 times against Peterhead over two fixtures.

All from right back, I'd hasten to add.

Better or worse than Grant Gillespie?

Worse than Gillespie at centre mid. Better than Gillespie at right back.

I can really see this guy being used more as right back/centre back cover.

I don’t think Kerr is going to play two defensive midfielders together. One will need to be able to get forward while Murdoch sits back.

Gillespie occasionally filled in at right back for us, but was more exclusively a centre mid. Miller certainly offered more use over the season. Good arial presence, so good to have in and around set pieces.

Started well for us, but kinda faded - maybe a side effect of it being his longest continual run of games  in a few years. In terms of his actual playing style, he wasn't exactly a modern right back, and would get the ball out wide, advance towards his opposite number, turn around and play the ball back into the middle.

Given McGlynn's insistence on playing out from the back last season, it made us very lop sided and heavily dependent on our left back getting up and down to start attacks. It says something that Dave McKay, plating right back and converted from a centre back was far more game about trying to get himself in behind on the overlap.

I dunno, he looked fine technically, made the odd rash challenge as a right back, but didn't offer enough in attack, is tall and strong enough to be worth having around penalty boxes, but had we a more natural right back last season I wouldn't have had him displacing any of our starting centre mids to keep him in the team.

... and Gillespie was not exactly outstanding there.

I can only think of Miller playing 45 mins at CM (home to Falkirk, 2-0 down at HT) and he may as well have not been there. Game totally passed him by. Pretty good at right back though. Bearing in mind we played most games on the front foot he wasn’t exactly a rampaging full back and I think that frustrated McGlynn a bit. Reasonable but not amazing at going forward, solid at defending is what you get.

I thought we’d keep him but wasn’t exactly heartbroken when we didn’t. Think he’s based in the West so it’s entirely possible he chose to leave, rather than released as presumed.

He was definitely part-time with us though. Are Ayr a hybrid set-up, or will he be going full-time?
