The Ultimate Super Ayr Thread

Had a wee look through the squad lists pinned in the forum earlier, assuming they are all up to date. We are in a fairly decent position numbers and balance wise. A couple of gaps that we all know about. There is a clump of teams with c21 signed up including ourselves, obviously waiting for the Premiership loans and cuts to start filtering down. There are also 2 or 3 with less than 20, Queens Park and Arbroath looking really short at present.

I reckon we might start to see some business over the next week with a number of B teams were knocked out last night from the challenge cup. With 3 more playing tonight, it'll probably be too early for the weekend.

Every team in the league waits on Premiership loans , and we have done extremely well in this area over the years, I couldn’t name any team who does not get loans in around this time of the loan window

McCall didn't.

Are you saying we should have paid a fee to get players in rather than waiting a few weeks to get them on free's / loan?

Or that we should have signed more players on free's earlier?

You have to remember we are at the start of a new approach, signing players to multi year deals. Next summer we may be in the position of only needing 3 or 4 players depending on how things pan out and players progress. This was always going to be a bit of a rebuild given the Hopkin effect. No team in the league has a full squad yet, we're in a pretty good place balance and numbers wise compared to others. Have a look at Raith Rovers and their lack of defenders for example.

Shankland was a late signing (8th September) and only on a short term deal to prove fitness, appreciate he was a once in a generation type player. But, he was a late release from Aberdeen.

Shankland was released by Aberdeen at the end of the previous season after stinking out a few clubs on loan.

The only full time club left he hadn’t been at was Ayr and he had shafted us the season before when he went to Morton rather than us and left McCall twiddling his thumbs in a cafe somewhere. Shankland said he had just been to sports direct to buy footballs because he was going to have to keep himself sharp while he was still looking for potentially a part time club when McCall phoned him.

The club said it had several players identified several players in every position and were well prepared for the window. Unless Glendinnings spreadsheet has a list of suitable U21s that will be going out on loan to the championship and we have provisional deals agreed should the players go out on loan, then this statement may have been bollocks.

The only things that have been said are by Mathie to say they have approached several ambitious targets who have gone elsewhere and from Bullen who said there isn’t a rush and he didn’t appear bothered if we got more players in or not.

To be fair it could be the case that we did have a number of targets, we've just been unable to sign any of them. With the new visa rules making foreign signings far more difficult the number of suiters for domestic signings has increased. Youth prospects appear to have EFL shaped vultures circling above them which will narrow the availability of players to clubs looking at loans. There is also the return of the reserve league, I'm assuming this will mean a reduction in outward loans as well. Unless they are going to be playing players from younger age groups that aren't loan ready to make up the numbers.

Goodwin at Aberdeen has stated that after signing 10 odd players there will be players leaving over the next couple of weeks, not sure on who they have that will fall into that category.

Im assuming a lot of the Prem teams will be in the same boat, Hearts, Hibs and Dundee Utd all seem to have signed a lot of players so would expect a bit of a clear out before the window shuts

Apart from Doohan, Kelly, Miller, McKenna, etc.

Doohan, Miller and McKenna were during the winter break (which is a different kettle of fish entirely) and Kelly was early July. This is the second week of August.

Word from the Dons fans is the departures will almost certainly be Connor McLennan, David Bates and  Marley Watkins.

They have a couple of good young lads in Ryan Duncan and Jack Milne but JG wants to keep them in amongst the first team until at least January.

Agreed on the other SPL teams mentioned, they should all have surplus players who are candidates for a Championship loan.

Difference between McCall and now is that he never really had to undertake an overhaul of the squad after we won the league. I think we added four players in Doohan, Harvie, Murdoch and then Smith. Although Smith wasn’t added until after we’d played a few league games. It’s really not unusual for clubs like us to be looking at adding a couple of extra players towards the end of the window. I’m sure we got Cammy Smith a bit later on as we had to wait for Dundee United to get their squad sorted before the started loaning players out.

Liam Smith 14th August , as Hearts  would not loan him the club gave McCall the money to sign him , lots of players get signed and loaned near end of August when found to be surplus’s to requirement at their clubs

We are evidently still very short of quality in the final third, but four points from our first two games have saved the club from a load of criticism. Still, I would expect it to be solved very soon - as the days roll on this weekend is looking unlikely too though.

I think we could end up with someone like McLennan from Aberdeen. Not exactly the experienced forward we need but he’s also not really a complete youngster anymore. Career has stagnated at Aberdeen and needs a kick start elsewhere.
