Despite the noise from some, this is a real pity.  The finals we got to in the 90s were great days out (particularly the Dundee one) and I have no doubt a final nowadays would attract a big Ayr crowd and generate a bit of buzz around the club.  No doubt a few of the “diddy cup” commenters might even attend such a game.

Those finals were in a time where the cup was a competition for the right reasons. Now look at how much of a shambles it is. It’s in comparison with the EFL trophy which fans of similar clubs to us view it and don’t attend the matches. It’s all about top SPFL clubs getting B teams into the leagues and nothing else.

From what I can see, there is no issue playing them, The club would have to re-call them, play them and then send them out on loan again...

Can't recall them until the winter transfer window.

Quite a diplomatic statement tbh, doing everything not to mention the complete double standard between one side being able to recall players at will and the other not. Which of course wouldn't have been the case if not for the capitulation of the SPFL in allowing the former in in the first place.

Very well put 👍

The spfl p*ssed their pants at not having a R*ngers amongst their ranks. Resurrection presumed. Now it seems everything goes in the favour of R*ngers 🤔

The Spfl looks upon the two Glasgow teams as a need and must. Smaller teams like Ayr get pushed aside by biast ruling in favour of a colt team of a Glasgow two.

Rangers actually stated that the players did not affect the result and admitted they were beaten by the better team , they did not put in any sort of appeal , we broke the rules of which in the past ( and stated in the rules available to all clubs ) has resulted in the result being awarded to the opponents by a score line of 3-0 , someone at the club gave the wrong advice on these players to the acting manager  , and lessons have been learned , at the end of the day we need to accept we cocked it up

I have read the rules here Microsoft Word - Challenge Cup Regulations revised for 2021_22 v1.7 (spfl.co.uk) The rules can be read to show that both Rangers B and Celtic B are in breach of the rules as their players must be "League Registered with the Club of the relevant Colt Team.". By entering the Lowland League, both appear to be in breach of the competition rules. In effect it can be argued that Rangers B fielded 17 ineligible players.

The final against Dundee was called the Centenary Cup and was meant to be a one-off competition to celebrate the FA’s centenary. It was brilliant because of the novelty and because we reached the final but it should have been left there.

The Frankenstein monstrosity it has now morphed into is an embarrassment to the lower leagues, hijacked by the old firms obsession with having B teams.

I really don't know why folk become raging maniacs with the mention of the Old Firm, B teams, Lowland League, Challenge Cup or any combination of them.

Be thankful for what we are and where we are but we should definitely look to win every match regardless of the competition.

We're better than decrying competitions for not being worthy of actually competing in.

We messed up, it's happened, we learn and we move on.

Yes, and it proved that there was a market for a cup tournament for lower league teams.

It could be a great wee cup.

Top 64 teams below the Premiership. Knock out style 1 legged games. Seeded so teams from same leagues won't play each other in early rounds.

Final on Scottish Cup final day at neutral venue. 12pm ko live on TV. Great warm up for Scottish Cup final and gives lower leagues great exposure.

The Challenge cup was a novelty, now it is just a distraction. We end up getting players injured or red carded and it effects our league performances.

Playing teams 4 times a year and spending years flitting between leagues along with the league cup group stages means there is absolutely no novelty left in the competition. Midweek games mean that there are no away days or occasions.

In recent years they have tried to make it different by adding Welsh and Irish teams, that just devalued the whole thing.

I've mentioned this before but making it regional, Maybe 8 regions of 5 teams. Play league games like the league cup, the winners of each region go in to the quarter finals. Teams can take it as serious as they like. The Ayrshire region could be Ayr, Kilmarnock and the top 3 Ayrshire WOSL teams from the year before, play each other once to become Ayrshire champions.

If colt teams have to be in the competition, they can play in their region. It might make it more interesting and probably make more money for clubs while saving on travel to play ties when they are all local.

Will cost club around 5 figure sum , prize money for winning will not be paid ,and then the future prize money as I think we could have beaten Alloa and potentially Cove

Have they increased prize money for this cup.

seem to remember only a few years ago that each team that exited before the final got £500.  Then if you got to the final it was more?

We were always going to be booted out, think it emphasises that the cup does have some hypocritical flaws though when premiership b teams are put in the competition for the sole purpose of player development yet when a senior team puts young players on we get punished.

I know we had them out on loan so they technically weren't our players at the time but still...

The cup would be some laugh if it had the junior teams in it, would maybe mean though the senior teams would take it more seriously to avoid the embaressment of getting knocked out by the likes of Talbot, i mean we've never experienced that one before or anything like that.....

The mistake was down to the club secretary Who has been at the club for years and should have known the rules simple as and no communication with the temp manager, I was at the game and left with ten to go so what was the point in putting two players on for there development for under ten minutes, if your gonna bring players back you surely have to play them from the start or what’s the point.
