General World Cup Nonsense

Does it seem to anyone else like the number of players feigning injuries is more than usual at this World Cup?

Every single innocuous challenge or header and someone seems to be rolling about the floor. Feels like there’s a stoppage every few mins.

Here's a question for you:

There are approximately 528 people in Nigeria (pop: 185,000,000) for every 1 person in Iceland (pop: 350,000) which is a World Cup record for population disparity. What match in World Cup finals history held this record before today (going by current population figures)?

The biggest disparity for Scotland (pop: 5,000,000) for example is against Brazil (pop :206,000,000) at 41:1.

For the qualifiers, Germany (82,800,000) played San Marino (33,285).  That is a ratio of 2,487 to 1.

It's a funny thing to get your head round altogether.

We've been used to groups of four with three guaranteed matches.  In 1954, it worked differently with just two games, but every other finals since has required three.  The terror of defeat and the potential for stitched up second games, doesn't sound likely to enhance the viewing experience.

There were groups of three at the 1982 finals although only after the groups of four

Well, yes, but it still followed the established routine of three guaranteed initial matches in a group of four.

Dislocated shoelaces.

This is definitely true, especially with fake head injuries. Almost every time there’s two players challenging for a header we get a minute break where both go down holding their face/head.

New ball to be used for knockout stage

I haven't heard anything about the ball being used at the World Cup until this story.  Past World Cups have seen the ball come in from heavy criticism, 2010 was the one that sticks out to me.  It does seem unusual to change the ball half way through the tournament.

I think it's just the same ball with red bits
