Poland at worst after that - tricky, but eminently winnable, you'd think. Brazil or Germany next; that's all folks. Dullard Bluteau Posted April 20, 2018 Share Posted April 20, 2018 The tradition with England is that they seem to breeze through qualification groups - mainly as they are in with dross anyway - but as soon as they meet a half decent team, they lose. This has been the case for decades and despite their press normally saying " this will be our year", all other football fans can see that they have no chance of doing well in any knock-out tournament as their players are always found wanting in the skill department. It is exacerbated even more lately because all their top teams are composed mainly of players ineligible to play for England, so some of their squad are reserves or occasional players. Having said all that, there is a country to the north of them who seem to think that players who are not good enough even to be considered for a proven failure of an international team, will somehow manage to represent another country and make them good enough to succeed. They might go out in the last sixteen, the furthest they can possibly get is the Quarters as there is no chance they're getting past Germany or Brazil. Maybe the quarters if they manage to play above themselves. From then they absolutely could go further with a hefty dose of luck, just like any side can. Were Costa Rica as good as their performances showed in 2014? Absolutely not, but still made it. Still though, it's going to take a better side having an off day and them playing far better than they usually do. So likely first knockout round for them. The only constant will be the wee nation attitude from most up here, laughing it up. Always fail to see the hilarity in watching a nation perform to par when we can't even reach that low level. Media, well I suppose that would depend whether you mean actually thinking they can do it, or the company line.
