Alloa v Stranraer

Recommended Posts

Fleming will be back next week. Agree Cawley should be starting, he's one of our best players and neither PJ nor Smith have anything on him. Taggart will miss next week, so hopefully Crane will be fit and back at left back again.

With Stranraer losing key players in January, Stevie Farrell deserves great credit for keeping his team competitive - beating us home and away - and still being in with a shout of the play-offs at this stage. In contrast to Jim Goodwin, who was well backed to improve his squad during the window but has struggled to get the best out of them.

Not exciting, but reckon that was our most professional display of the season for our first win at the Recs for 14 years! Not a single failure in the team and an unlikely match winner on the day in Morgyn Neill. Kyle Turner was absolutely superb - reckon he’ll be moving up a league very soon. He rattled the crossbar and also missed a great chance - both of which would have ended the contest. Our defence was solid - and it’s not often we’ve been able to say that this season. A pleasure to see how the younger players are slotting in comfortably too - a result to make a Saturday night all the more enjoyable!

Cant really begrudge Stranraer the 3 points. Didnt think we were particularly terrible, below par perhaps, but still had our moments. Had some good chances (Renton in particular) and they rode their luck at times, but overall most of the credit must go to the visitors. It was a strong performance from them in most areas of the park.

I take it Meggatt is still not fully match fit yet, because it was an ideal opportunity to pitch him back in. Eventually switched Taggart back to right back where he was probably our best player.

Should still get over the line without too much bother, but would be better to pick up a result next week and get the job done before playing Ayr and Raith.

Starting Taggart left back and PJ and Smith before Cawley was just bizzare

Any agreements with parent clubs that their players MUST get game time could come back to haunt us in the play offs.  Cawley possesses our biggest goalscoring threat in midfield so it is annoying that he isn't getting proper game time.  We have some terrific players in forward positions but even this late in the season I don't think the manager has a clue who is best and where.  We are crying out for real width and getting true wide players on the park to get balls on from the byeline.

Struggled to get the best from them.......hardly.  A lot of good wins since the turn of the year. The first quarter damaged us as we were poor but since the late autumn we have been mostly  ok. We were poor yesterday but surely this hardly constitutes a crisis.

Some are really needing to get a grip and get off the managers back. He has made mistakes but his win ratio to games played has been excellent.  We are a decent outfit to watch and could quite easily finish third with two full time teams above us. Hardly a disaster and some really have to be careful what they wish for.

Our problems  recently had been starting the games with a slow tempo and starting playing once we are trailing . Our keeper has been poor of late and another poor goal lost yesterday.

I second that laying off the manager and the players. I have a third interview with Robbo and he hits the nail in the head with his assessment of the game if I get time to do it 'll put it up. It was an even game again where the difference was a set piece.

We were unfortunate to not get a goal but some of the shouts from the sidelines are ridiculous.

Some of the shouts from the sidelines are indeed ridiculous but I think its important to separate this from what Waspie is saying.

The business conducted in January was excellent. We have maximised utilisation of the loan market. Whether people agree with this or not is another debate entirely, but its within the rules of the game so it doesnt really matter. But I think on paper we have a really good squad of players. Certainly some decent teams and players in this league on their day, and we should still make play offs. But I dont think its out of line to expect a bit more at times based on the squad at our disposal. And the manager has even said himself he feels we should be putting teams to the sword more often.  There are plenty of positives there, such as the players character, and theres a good balance. But while our form has been okay, and you inevitably get a day where it doesnt go for you- there is room for improvement.

Should we as expected make playoffs it would be preferable to go into them with real momentum. That might yet happen of course with 3 games left. Its certainly going to be a lot tougher than last season.

Nobody suggesting it's a crisis or disaster or anything like that but the form since the new year has been at times underwhelming given the quality of player we now have. For this level of football Ross Stewart is an excellent striker and Flannigan, Kirkpatrick and Cawley is a fantastic combination to have behind him, with the options of Smith, Crossan and Renton too. We also brought in a young CB who was playing regularly in the Premier League last season. We should have finished 3rd comfortably yet we are limping over the finishing line and have dropped points to sides with significantly poorer resources. Losing home and away to a Stranraer side who were stripping their squad back at the same time Goodwin was being allowed to boost his dramatically is a prime example of that. The chopping and changing hasn't helped. No coincidence I suspect that Jim's best spell at Alloa was before Christmas when we were down to the bare bones and he didn't have too many options to change things around.

I never give players and management anything other than full support at the Recs, but don't see any issue with questioning why we aren't getting the best out of a squad which - since the turn of the year at least - is stronger than everyone outside the top two. Need to make the most of these quality players while we have them. Hope Jim can do that in the weeks ahead by securing that play-off spot and giving whoever we play a real challenge.

We missed Fleming badly yesterday and crane was a loss as well. Fleming has been the outstanding midfielder for us this season and crane gives us natural balance with his left foot. Moving taggart over upset his natural instincts to attack and once he was switched over to his right side berth he looked dangerous.  Any changes to the back four are always difficult to manage as the defence should always play as a unit.

Even the great teams have off days and we have seen this recently with much bigger outfits than alloa. Coupons are burst every week as things seldom go to plan .
