Not politics but the absolute bitterness here is rather amusing: 

Scotland were promoted to bronze.

Their team of Zoey Clark, Beth Dobbin, Jill Cherry and Nicole Yeargin, rather than England, climbed the podium in front of a half-empty Alexander Stadium when the medal ceremony took place.

Hilariously bitter stuff from the BBC there....
 

Like Knight's apparent victory, it seemed a matter of millimetres. But it was clear and decisive and England, who did not appeal, were stripped of their eighth track-and-field gold of the Games.

Well, no. They weren't "stripped" of anything, They broke the rules and so were disqualified.

Saturday was the Brodick Highland games - annually the biggest day for hospitality on the Island.  7am from Ardrossan - off. 9.40.  (With most of the pipe bands etc,)almost an hour late.   Evening ferries on Saturday taking tourists home - off. No cars getting off the island from 4pm on Saturday till 11 on Sunday. If people are coming, and many are put off, then experiences like that mean they are less likely to come back.

Don’t think so - just on the Arran route, as that’s the one that affects me, other issues are:

1. New pier that can”t take a boat with an Easterly wind of over.15 knots (which happens more than you think).  Built 5 years ago

2. Wrong boat ordered - we could have had 4 smaller vessels doing a shuttle service for less than the original price of the new Glen Sannox

3. On board accommodation required for crew rather than accomodation at each end.  Glen Sannox massively overspeced because of this.

None of these are due to the “global crash” in 2008.  They are due to CMAL incompetency, CMAL is of course 100% SG owned.

The SG are a lot better than Westminster. Doesn’t give them a free pass and they are currently killing island communities.

I”ll take that as just a glib comment about genocide.  Businesses are shutting at what should be the height of the season due to ferry issues.

Other islands have the Co-op rationing milk and bread due to lack of deliveries.  

I’m a big SNP supporter, but they have fucked this and have no plan to get us out of it.  It might not be what you want to hear, but its sadly the truth.

This is a bit like Saints fans that are adamant that they should be involved in every decision made by the club since we became fan owned. The answer is the same in both cases. Fan / Government owned doesn't (and shouldn't) mean fan / government run.

Not sure if it's bias or just annoying.  Dunno why, but I'm a bit grumpy today. 

Why does the 1.00 pm "national" news & weather on BBC 1 always seem to overrun by a few minutes? Deliberate, or editorial incompetence? The Reporting Scotland scheduled for 1.30 pm always starts 3 or 4 minutes late, but never itself overruns, presumably because of a network programme at 1.45 pm which always starts on schedule.

Nice to see/hear BBC R2 promoting a series of upcoming programmes to celebrate Jamaica’s 60th year of independence and how it’s enabled the country to flourish.

I was under the impression that independence was divisive, nasty, inward looking and racist.

Independence for everyone else = good.

independence for Scotland = bad.

Pleased to hear that if it’s true.

Wife and I went to Jamaica every year between 2004 and 2012 and, apart from the resorts, the impression we got was one of decay and neglect. The infrastructure was terrible with the roads full of potholes and old rusting cars and lorries abandoned at the roadside. The shops were very poor and had very little to sell. Drug dealers were everywhere and the resorts needed 24 hour security.

The big thing seemed to be Bob Marley and the tat being sold was predominantly around his memory.

I know absolutely nothing about it’s economic performance, GDP, etc. but these were just our impressions.
Maybe it’s come on as the country most definitely has great potential with the weather, beaches, tourism, etc. and the locals we met were generally very friendly.

We were attending a yearly rock and blues festival and visitors were encouraged to bring books for the local schools which were in short supply.

A very striking thing was how well turned out the school kids were with school uniform appearing to be compulsory.

Anyway, pleasing if true.

Newsnight covering the state of cancer care in the the UK, especially since Covid and delayed diagnosis and treatment. The medical expert brought on to comment was Karol Sikora, a man who has previously lied about his qualifications and called the NHS a communist enterprise on American TV. The answer apparently is not to raise health expenditure as a proportion of GDP to that of more successful neighbours in Europe, but to privatise initial diagnosis, leaving the NHS to deal with the tricky and underfunded treatment part.

I assume that he declared an interest in the matter, what with his company (recently defunct) specialising in erm, providing cancer diagnostics to private patients?

Next on Newsnight, Tim Martin explains how lowering the minimum wage will stimulate growth while James Dyson advocates paying subsidies to factories in Singapore.
