Comparisons with fletcher are difficult, fletcher was introduced patiently  into a very good man utd side with top players like Rooney and Ronaldo and they were winning league titles.

Mctominey has been brought into an absolute shambles and to some extent has been chucked into the deep end at times with players who wouldn't have got a sniff at one of Ferguson's teams.

I think we should be lining up with a defensive midfielder like McTominay regardless of who we're playing. Even in the San Marino game our midfield was wide open and had no structure because we just had three midfielders wanting to go forward every time they had the ball.

But Craig, shouldn't we be going 4 up front against teams like this, cos it's San Marino and that?  We don't need anyone defensive.  No even a keeper.

You do need balance and somebody to protect your CBs, for me he has to start pretty much every game.  We have virtually no other DMs available except Ryan Jack and he's pish.

Yes

There's also the fact that it gives the other midfielder less to worry about so they can focus on the offensive side of the game. Guys like McGregor and McGinn are have decent defensive attributes but it's not their natural game to sit deep.

I wouldn't even call Jack a 'defensive' midfielder. He plays in a deep role and won't make too many forays forward but he offers very little in a defensive capacity.

He starts attacks and provides a structure to the midfield.

McTominay was honking last night. Still to be convinced by him. Absolute lunacy that people want to throw him into being first choice just because he's getting a start for Man Utd. Thankfully Steve Clarke doesn't seem to be that thick, so he'll need to earn his place on merit.

I thought he looked cumbersome and stood out as being particularly slow on the ball in comparison to the rest of the midfield. There was a passage of play in particular towards the end of the first half where he just kept giving the ball back to his teammate who was under pressure 2 yards away from him before he got booted up in the air. It's encouraging to see him being given so much game time for a side who will finish somewhere from 3rd to 6th in that league.

Assuming Forrest and Fraser start either side of a striker, we've got 3 spots for McGinn, McGregor, McTominay, Christie, Armstrong, McLean. I'd argue it's three of the first four but it's a tough decision who to leave out.

I'd have McGregor, McGinn and Christie starting from that bunch, but I wouldn't complain if it was any three of them.  Good options to have in there.

Well at least you’re trolling in more than one word now.

I think we have to play Mctominay as he’s the only midfielder of those who can be an effective screen for the defence. McGregor can play that position but is better at starting moves from deep when he have the ball but helping out the defence isn’t the best part of his game especially if there’s not another defensive mid type alongside him. Christie, Mcginn and Armstrong are all much better further forward but it’s hard to see how we can afford to play more than one of them at a time. Especially for the calibre of opponent in our next few games.

Armstrong plays the least amount of regular football of the lot.  He'll be lucky to even make the squad IMO

He’d be one of the first names on the team sheet for me. Always impresses for Scotland IMO.
