Edinburgh Bars

It is rare that I venture into the city centre these days other than to watch the cabbage but I am heading up tonight and looking for suggestions of good bars, preferably no old man pubs..

The Black Bull in the Grassmarket is a good place to start imo. A proper pub with a good mix of clientele (usually) but hasn’t turned into yet another one of those wanky, trendy-type bars that Edinburgh seems to have in abundance.

A venue with running water would be enough to get the denizens of Pilton excited.

It’s great, from the outside it’s black and looks just like the Dakota in South Queensferry but I don’t think they are the same chain. At the downstairs bit they have a Starbucks (which I haven’t been to) and then a pretty big bar and then a grill restaurant next to it. The bar is nice and spacious and has plenty of tables and screens and is always a good busy atmosphere on a Friday night. When you go to the toilets they are located quite near the swimming pool and you get a nice smell of chlorine when there which isn’t something that you get from the pubs in town.

Me and the Mrs are thinking of having our wedding there.

The most pretentious wanky pub has got to be the Hanging Bat on Lothian Road.

I’ll take your word for it. Never been in it I don’t think. George Street is just one big pretentious, wanky cluster of pubs and eateries.

It’s just absolute w**k, it’s badly organised and the furniture is deliberately uncomfortable in an attempt to be cool/rustic. The urinals are made to look like they are metal beer barrels cut in half but when ever I was peeing in them I was thinking about it being more like a beer can cut in half which would be very sharp and not something I wanted my piece near. Avoid.

Rather than going out to town I would recommend the Village hotel out near the Crewe toll roundabout for a night out.

The village specialises in dinner/cabaret deals. I would rather sit next to the wackiest hipster in The Hanging Bat than sit amongst pish stained Grannies frothing at the crotch over the Tom Jones tribute act.

Oh my gosh! The thought of being crippled by a rustic chair then having my willy sliced off by a novelty urinal when all I sought was a nice pint of T makes beyond apprehensive.

I will be sure to avoid The Hanging Bat in future. Sound advice as always Throbs. Keep on doing what you do. Never change.

Have you ever been to the Pilton Hilton? Or the Hanging bat for that matter?

The Hanging bat is that pretentious it doesn’t even sell Tennents!

I have never been to the Hilton Pilton but going by their website the Spice Girls and Taylor Swift tribute acts coming up look just great for your wedding.

I've been to the Hanging Bat once and it was shit.

The Pilton Hilton is well worth a visit tbf, I suppose it’s not as handy if you live in Fountainbridge though.

Grimbo likes it in the PH.

It has a bar downstairs though so who cares what’s going on upstairs?

You obviously haven’t been tjete and are just saying this in an attempt to win an argument.

Calm down throbber, I'm sure your Rod Stewart tribute nights out are really cool and fun.
