The biggest surprise for me is that Russ Abbot's Madhouse was on in 1980. I thought it started around 1982.

Wikipedia says it started as the Freddie Starr Variety Madhouse in 1979

Which means Russ was very much David Gilmour to Starr's Syd Barrett

The supporting cast changed  so the 1980 madhouse wouldn't be the classic line up you remember

Which I think makes Bella Emberg the Stevie Nicks character

You're spot on, that photo is the one I remember.

Aye but that was completely different. The whole of the civilised world celebrated that one when you could hear the net ripple.

'The series showcased Abbot's talents as an all round entertainer...'

For younger viewers it may be necessary to explain that the program titled "BJ and the Bear" wasn't what you're thinking

Indeed.

Bear was actually a chimpanzee.

A full 20 minutes of Archie MacPherson describing the cup final atmosphere.  What a prospect.

Unsure how to choose between Russ Abbotts Madhouse or the analysis of the Scottish Conservative conference in the evening though.  Decisions decisions.

There's a chance that, due to the extra time and ensuing riot on the pitch, that either Happy Days or Russ Abbot got binned.

The Pink Panther Show looks like a pre-thought expendable inclusion.

When did the Cup Final Singles trend die out?

We had a rather unseemly uptempo version of "Oh, When the Saints" in 1987.

We played at Brockville the week before the Killie v Falkirk final in 1997 and the home side played their cup final single a few times over the tannoy.

It was an absolute fucking dirge.

It was truly awful.

Still bought it, of course, and have it somewhere.

The Pink Panther show was the sort of shite they put on when Scottish kids were on summer holiday and the English kids weren't, so the proper stuff wasn't allowed on. See also, Why Don't You? from Northern Ireland and "Heidi".

Yeah, not sure I want to get onto the subject of Cup Final songs.
